Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe FAQ

Here is a summary of the facts so far:

This game may or may not be canon, that has yet to be decided. There will be no Fatalities, but there will be finishing moves that finish the opponent in a spectacular way, but it won't be gory. While there will be blood, the game will be rated "T", however, Midway is looking to push the "T" rating as close to "M" as possible without crossing the line.

Midway's Marketing team knew people at DC and discussed it with them. When DC agreed, the idea was presented to Ed Boon who, after some deliberation, agreed to the idea. So it was Midway who began the crossover.

The storyline for the game will be written by comic book veterans Jimmy Palmotti (Monolith, 21 Down, Painkiller Jane) and Justin Gray (Jonah Hex, Crisis Aftermath: The Battle for Bludhaven, JLA Classified). The DC universe will take place in modern day. From this, I gather there will be no "future" characters like "V" from V for Vendetta.

MK vs DCU will feature a story mode from two different perspectives, one from the DC side, and one from the MK side. Ed Boon mentioned that the DC characters will see the MK characters as the invaders, and vice-versa.

The character count may be 22 characters total. 20 is the minimum expected. As before, half will be MK and half will be DC. Ed Boon said that the most "iconic" characters from MK and DC will appear. Equally, there will be various MK and DC arenas.

Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Sonya, have been confirmed for the MK side, and Batman, Flash, and Superman are confirmed for the DC side.

A note about Superman, due to the universal merger storyline, he is weakened by the magic effects, making him a balanced character. One thing that is not known to some people is that Superman's weakness is not limited to Kryptonite, he can also be weakened by magic.

There are images available at other sites of Flash and Sonya, however, I am forbidden to post direct links according to the rules of Midway Forums. To see them, you could either search for these sites yourself, wait for renders, or purchase X-box 360 Magazine.

Some information about special moves has been released. Each character will have about six special moves.

Released information shows Scorpion has his Spear and a Teleport Uppercut attack so far.

Sub-Zero has his Freezing Ice Ball move, but at this time no other moves are known for him.

Flash, similar to Kabal, can spin his opponent like a top simply using his own speed.

Superman has his Heat Vision and Freeze Breath, however unlike Sub-Zero's Ice ball, the freeze breath attack is limited to close or medium range. He will also sport an exaggerated throw during which he flies his opponent ten feet up before slamming them back to the ground.

At this time there is no information on Batman or Sonya's special Moves.

As for the standard gameplay itself, Freefall Kombat is tied in part to stage interaction. The mode is another player initiated sequence which is kicked off by you flinging your opponent off a stage. Unlike previous games you won't just follow them down or watch yourself drop. Instead the camera will come in and you'll be able to fight on the way down. You'll have a slightly tweaked set of possible attacks in this mode, much like Klose Kombat.

Then there's Klose Kombat. Klose Kombat is a mode you'll initiate which pulls in the camera in close and has its own separate mechanics. Basically, when you initiate the mode you'll be the aggressor and your opponent will be on defense. In this closer view you'll be able to attack your foe's upper body with different types of blows for a set period of time, the exact duration of which is still being ironed out. To keep things fair, your opponent will be able to perform a number of different defensive moves to dodge your attacks, provided they're fast.

As for general fighting, attacks and special moves will be open-ended, players will be able to create their own combos
rather than bashing out buttons etched deep in the memory. As a result of attacks, masks will shatter, and clothes will tear revealing scarred skin and wounds gained during battle.

There will be arena destruction and interaction. You can throw your opponent through walls, and off of high places, and into other parts of the arena. There will be no stage fatalities or deathtraps mid-round. This time around you will have to beat your opponent to death.

This game will not include any elements of previous games. No Konquest, and no Puzzle, motor, or chess Kombat.

MK vs DCU will utilize the Unreal 3 engine, as well as original code developed by Midway. The game will be released this fall for PS3 and Xbox 360. There is no unreal 3 engine for Nintendo Wii, however Ed Boon states that he has no problem with MK vs DCU for the Wii if it can be done.

An MK vs DCU demo will be playable at E3 from July 15th to July 17th.

Other information posted by Iceberg:

A link to an interview, things of interest said here:

http://crispygamer.com/_GeneratedPages/Interviews/Interview831.aspx

Mentions fighting arenas that are actual mergers of two arenas from both universes, like a combination of Shang Tsungs island and something from DC.

Though nothing has been decided yet, he is leaning for this game to be a "what if..." situation or storyline.

His intention is to have multiple franchises running side-by-side, the VS. and the MK games to be released together.

He fully intends to make the next MK an M-Rated game thats just MK.

Boon clarifies how this game came to be, saying this game was not his original intention, but his desire to make a crossover outweighed any drawbacks this game presented.

There most likely will not be any console exclusive characters, a la Soulcalibur IV.
