Pope Says Stopping Gays As Important As Saving Rainforest

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Monday that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behavior was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction.

"(The Church) should also protect man from the destruction of himself. A sort of ecology of man is needed," the pontiff said in a holiday address to the Curia, the Vatican's central administration.

"The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less."

The Catholic Church teaches that while homosexuality is not sinful, homosexual acts are. It opposes gay marriage and, in October, a leading Vatican official called homosexuality "a deviation, an irregularity, a wound."

The pope said humanity needed to "listen to the language of creation" to understand the intended roles of man and woman. He compared behavior beyond traditional heterosexual relations as "a destruction of God's work."

He also defended the Church's right to "speak of human nature as man and woman, and ask that this order of creation be respected."

While Catholicism isn't necessarily the most open-minded religious branch, you have to put into context its history, which is very traditionally oriented and, because of this, change cannot come fast. I don't understand how we are the ones responsible for such worldly-referential degradation in terms of rights. You're pigeonholing cultural problems into an organization that hardly reigns supreme in public eye and is of little reason to why things like Prop 8 did not pass. I don't agree with the Pope's statement, at all, but still feel that far too often an overt amount of emphasis is put on their token cultural statements, of which you already know their stance upon. This is also, for lack of a better term, an interm-Pope, one that isn't expected to live very long and not make any drastic decisions. Obviously The Church was reeling after the death of John Paul II and needed, not someone to replace him, but someone adequate enough for the time being.

I am guessing but teh church seems to tyak eth point of view that homosexuality is not a choice. In light of that they say being gay itself is not a sin but performing sexual activities of a homosexual nature is a sin.

That would be the most idotic act to do from a strategic point, they would unify the catholics, elect a crazy pro-war pope whom would lead this world into another inquistion war on the middle east and with them would drag any nation whom is catholic friendly and thier allies and the middle east could be wiped off the face of the planet.

Come on Ben, the 'church' hasn't come to their conclusion through scientific research. It's just always been viewed as a 'sin', and a 'choice', and this notion has been passed down from generation to generation. That really isn't even up for debate.

There's no reason why someone's sexual preference should be an issue whatsoever in any discussion.

Im arguing with myself about replying because i can see your point of view. So i do not want you to think i am arguing i am just sharing my point of view with you.

Sexual preferance should not matter unless the topic is what constitutes marriage. What has been passed down does not necessarily require science it requires knowledge of the theology/philosophy of the body. Which is the 'natural' process of the body. This is what i mean. The actions of homosexuality are sinful and will continue to be sinful regardless of what science can prove in regards to sexuality being or not being a choice. The reason is because the main purpose of sex is to bring about new life, and i think you would agree with that. I am not saying the reason people have sex is to have children i am saying the reason a man has sex organs and the reason a woman has sex organs that work with one another is to perpeuate our species. That has to be a deciding factor in homosexual actions being wrong in the eyes of the church. Homosexual realtions do not bring new life into the world they do not perpetuate mankind.

I guess I can't argue about what their views are, and I understand it being considered "unnatural" for homosexual sex since it doesn't serve function of reproduction of the species, (though I'm not for a second saying I have a problem with it.)

Regardless, to state that homosexuality is a serious problem is just plain dumb. Thinking that "it is a sin and is wrong" is one thing, I think it's very closed minded, but taking things radical like suggesting it is a global threat is what gives religion a bad name. Who cares what somebody does in their private sex life?

The perception of religion has evolved in a sense that weather/diseases aren't viewed anymore as the gods being angry and people need to sacrifice small animals in order to appease them. It's too bad that a concept as silly as this still gets attention.

Besides I have a question. If God is omniscient, he knows all that was, is and will be. So doesn't that mean he knows when a guy will fuck another guy ? Doesn't that mean that God watched gay porn ?

In conclusion, God is gay. My logic is just as good as how religion says homosexuality is bad.

It is interesting that sex is only for procreation in the Catholic church's mind. Condoms, birth control, sodomy, homosexuality, etc they are against because it doesn't serve the natural purpose. Yet this argument is flawed because men and women enjoy and want/need sex, even when they can't reproduce.

Also interesting to think that some of the greatest science advancements were made by religious people funded by the church. It is the church's very own research that they are ignoring :bowroflarms:
