i was always told that you need 1.5-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight to gain and maintain muscle mass.....but recently iv heard from many doctors and health specialists that an athlete or someone who worksout/weight trains only need 0.8-0.9 grams of protein per KILOGRAM of body weight.... any feedback here on this??

yea. that is what they say for a person who really does not do that much workouts. But for someone who does more they can go 2 1.4 g/kg of body weight. Again for me i think u can def go higher to aleast 1 lb of protein per lb of bodyweight.

I can assure you that your protein requirements do not exceed 1.4g per kilogram. Now that being said, there are times where a bodybuilder will need to increase that for short amounts of time as other macronutrients are depleted.

Eh for the average person Id say your doctor is right. But I dont think Ive heard one person refer to bodybuilders as normal besides themselves, and even thats a rarity. Not saying hes wrong, but most people wont grow off of that little of protein. Not unless your inert, of course.

1g/lb of body weight is sufficient bulking. Cutting, figures should be raised a bit. The 1.5-2g fallacy has taken the low road and is considered obsolete as far as I, and many others are concerned.

I have read (I can try to find the studies if need be) that athletes should consume ~1.6g of protein per lb of bw. And I do believe this, I agree that 2g of protein per lb of bw is excessive. I would shoot for around 1.5 or 1.6 if you want to be exact (but you don't necessarily have to).

As far as what doctors say, they are not specialists in exercise physiology exactly. Neither are they experts in supplementation, so I would not necessarily go to a doctor for you bodybuilding supplementation advice. If you have doubts, look it up online and/or read studies where this has been tested. :thumbsup2:

^^ It isn't 1.6g/lb it is 1.6g/kg of BW.

But as I pointed out in the thread in the articles section this is all you need but dependant on your macro ratios you may be consuming far more than this quite healthily. The point is this should drive how you choose your macros.

In the example it was 5000 cal diet for a 100kg bloke. So carbs can be as high as 67% and protein as low as 13% without limiting protein. At a 30:50:20 P:C:F you can easily consume double the amount needed for muscle growth. Which means you can consider eating more carbs if you want.

just try to get 25g - 30g of protein in each meal.. that's enough for keeping your body anabolic.

^^ Quoting what research???

It is the total calories, not the amount of protein that is the over-riding factor that we were pointing out. Protein is good but it is not a panacea.
