He grew up in Talovaya, a village of 10,000 in western Russia.His father was a railroad engineer, his mother a schoolteacher. He excelled in wrestling and soccer before joining the Red Army of the Soviet Union in 1989. In May 1992, after the fall of communism, the Red Army became the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and Shelestov rose to the rank of captain before leaving the service in 1996.
He took up bodybuilding in 1990, shortly after the army stationed him in Moscow.
