Man barbecues his pet pitbull

A man in New Zealand who cooked his pet dog will not be charged as it is legal to do so.
Paea Taufu, a Tongan-born man living in Auckland New Zealand was in the process of roasting his pitbull terrier-cross in a traditional Umu pit-barbecue when animal protection inspectors arrived to investigate.
They were called by a concerned member of the public on Sunday but arrived too late for the animal.
Dog meat is considered an acceptable fare in Tonga. "Dog, horse, we eat it in Tonga. It's good food for us," said Lupi Taufu, Paea's wife.
Under New Zealand's Animal Welfare Act it is legal to kill a dog providing the slaughter is done quickly and painlessly.
But the local Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has criticised the actions. "I find it quite disturbing that someone would kill a pet and then eat it. I'm not okay with that but unfortunately the law allows you to do it," SPCA Inspector Derek Haddy told reporters.
Taufu was not aware that he was doing something uncommon in New Zealand but indicated he would not kill another dog to avoid offending anyone in the future.

Now I love dogs and all but really I don't see that big of a deal if it was quick and painless.

We kill countless cows, goats, lamb, etc. They are pretty close to dogs. My buddy's mom has a pet cow that follows her around and is pretty much like one of her dogs. They are still going to eat it when the time comes. Its like anything else on a farm.

With that said, I couldn't do it. I can't even think about doing that to my Rott. He means too much to me. I had a hard enough time having to put down my last dog when he was 12 yrs old.

There's no nobility in revenge, nor is it what the law is intended for.

how can one compare a cow to a pet/dog.. cow's are clearly meant to be eaten and used for milk.. a dog is not meant to be eaten.. horses are another good example.

every culture is different.

there are many cultures that eat both dog and horse.

I'm not saying that I'm ok with it, but I'm just pointing it out.

on a side note.. Arrested Development is an amazing show!!! i wish the series was not discontinued..

As long as the death was quick and painless I see nothing morally wrong with it, although it does raise quite a few questions about the man's character.
