I don't deadlift barefoot because I deadlift Sumo style... although the chucks aren't much protection, they do help a bit if I dump the weight on my foot.
I seem to be alternating between deadlifting barefoot or in shoes at the moment. Doesn't make much of a difference for me. I only notice it when I go to do calves afterwards, which I really need shoes on for.
I've Deadlifted both while wearing shoes and without - just in my socks. It doesn't matter to me as long as the shoes I wear and totally flat-footed. You need your feet to be flat when you Deadlifting with zero heel inclination. As long as you have that, I think it is a matter of comfort to choose between DL'ing with shoes or barefoot.
