Never tried it nor will I ever. There are better ways imo. But for those who like it why not its better than doing nothing.

Its pretty good for fit camp style workouts. Its marketable for sure.

What is the problem with the "Train your abs and do your diet" ?

Abs are made in kitchen first , then you just have to give them some work with many good exercises.
They just are visible when you got a low body fat %, so if you train really hard but with a bf high they wont "breathe".

deadlifts and squats made more to my abs.. than any ab specific exercise..

That is a contradiction in terms. How can you have a great workout program that only happens twice per week? "I got really great at playing guitar with one hour twice per week." "All it took was one hour twice per week to achieve greatness, all those fools spending their every waking moment were wasting their time." :rofl3:

To what end?

I think that abs are like any other muscle, so train them as you would any other muscle. But I also think that there are several exercises that already hit the abs in any given training week.

I'm not the best example of ab training. I remember doing weighted situps, crunches galore, etc, etc to arrive at the same set of abs I'd always had. So I now only really do ab work when I'm needing some mid section strength for other lifts.
