I view cycling as a form of walking. View have two things in common, view involve both legs and are rhythmic. This tones the muscles and improves the strength to the heart without the risk of overexertion. This is a form of preventive medicine due to the release of feel good hormones like norepinephrine and serotonin which alleviate stress and contribute to longevity.

It seems like the leg workout would pump the blood to the heart from the legs when cycling, and make you very healthy over the long run, so I am not surprised at all. I know a lot of french people in general that smoke a lot, but they eat a pretty good diet and drink their red wine as well - and are in good health, so go figure.
