Coming up to the venue on Sunday morning I saw an unbelievable view: a few-hundred meters queue of people trying to get to the Pabellon de Cristal to watch the last three – the heaviest – men bodybuilding categories and women’s fitness finals and to see the latest fitness industry offer at nearly 100 booths. Nowadays, similar queues are seen on the rock stars concerts only. Does it mean that bodybuilders are so popular like rock or pop singers? Not yet, but bodybuilding and fitness as a life style is, maybe, even more popular than show business stars. This is a result of the “fitness crusade” started some 40 years ago, as Governor Schwarzenegger likes to call this phenomenon. In his speech at the Spanish Olympic Committee Headquarter Friday afternoon he emphasized this matter once again and the long line of visitors in front of the Pabbelon de Cristal in Madrid is the best evidence that Arnold ‘s theses are true.
Mr. Schwarzenegger visited the finals personally when *the longest line-up of 43 bodybuilders in the 100 kg category were running the battle in the semifinals. He entered the stage together with the IFBB President Dr. Rafael Santonja, and – evidently happy – greeted athletes and shook hands with many of them. It seems he likes to be on stage with top bodybuilders once again and he respects them very much.
Due to the high number of athletes in the 90 kg and 100 kg categories the system of judging was changed: first the top 15 were selected, then the semifinals were run and then the top 6 performed in the finals. In the super heavyweight class 22 athletes entered the stage, so there was no elimination round, only semifinal and final. First, athe winner in each category had to be announced and they were:
- 90 kg category: Jose Angel Bustamante (Venezuela) who won the first edition of the Arnold Classic Europe in 2011 but then lost the title and regained it now.
- 100 kg category: Ibrahim Fahim (Egypt) who won the 2012 Amateur Mr. Olympia in Kuwait and now added the other prestigious title to his collection.
- Over 100 kg: Sandro Hofer (Switzerland) who at the 2011 Arnold Europe even didn’t enter the semifinals. Great improvement, perfect body lines and muscle quality and… the overall title as well.
Seven champions from 7 categories, 7 countries and 4 continents entered the stage to battle for the overall title. The biggest pretenders were: Ibrahim Fahim, Jose Angel Bustamante, Ahmed Ashkanani and Sandro Hofer. After the first comparison it was clear that the title would go either to Hofer or to Fahim and finally Hofer won 3 points ahead of Fahim. Congratulations to the new Arnold Classic Europe champion of the champions!
Women’s fitness routines were very attractive and impressive but the second round (physique assessment) has made some “corrections” to the order. Finally the title went to:
- Up to 163 cm: Dominika Multanova (Slovakia) who continue a series of victories after winning the world title in Kiev 3 weeks ago. And she is still junior!
- Over 163 cm: Oksana Orobets (Ukraine) – former world junior champion who performed her routine with incredible tempo and won her first prestigious women’s title.
This was the last accent of the 2013 Arnold Classic Europe but the crowed was still going around for a long time. Last year, when Arnold Europe moved to this new, bigger location, it seemed that it would be enough for many years ahead. Now the Organizers has a new problem: to find out a new venue with bigger space!
