By Paul Kelso:
I just spent five days in Quezon City at the Asian powerlifting championships, December 6-10th. Saw old friends, some first met 23 years ago at an Asian in Taiwan. I think this year was my 10th Asian - counting bench press affairs perhaps 14th. Officially, these were the Asian Women’s Powerlifting Championships, Dec 6, and the Asian Classic Bench Press Championships for both men and women, Dec 7-10. The affair was organized so that women could compete in the three lift PL contest the 6th and then return on the 10th for the ladies’ day bench rodeo. Many did.
The odd scheduling resulted from the 2013 Men’s Asian being held in Iran earlier in the year. As Iran and other Muslim countries do not allow men and women to compete together, separate meets were necessary. The Asian Classic Bench was already set for Q.C., so the women’s PL meet was attached. “Classic” means only belts and wrist wraps allowed. Forty-eight men from sub-juniors to masters three took part. Twenty-five women hoisted on the 10th - including a 120 kg (264 lbs) effort by disabled lifter Adeline Ancheta of Philippines.
