    BMI and Bodybuilding

    Don't know if BMI and bodybuilding has been discussed at length here because I have been gone for about 6 months or so.

    Here's the quandary:
    On one side, my BMI says I am anywhere between 25 to 40 lbs overweight or obese as the chart said. I guess I do have a little left on the love handles to get rid of and maybe a little on the man tit thing but overall I can't see me losing that much weight and maintaining muscle mass and future growth.

    On the other side of the scale there are a couple of pro bodybuilders who I have talked to who do not worry about their BMI because the calculations might be inaccurate.

    What's the story on it? No worries or worry? It seems to me if my workout and diet regime are on line then no worry. But then again, there is still a lot to learn and I want to get it right.

    It is a good question. I ignore those calculations that use weight and height only. I think to get accurate bmi a doctor has to physically use a tool.

    The BMI is not relevant for jacked bodybuilders, nor for most of the athletes competing in the upper categories in the strength sports as it's meant to measure the average people, who don't have an extremely active lifestyle. Keep in mind that most of the folks rarely do any sports, not to say that a lot of people use their cars even to get somewhere within a mile range.

    If you have an active life and you think you are in pretty good shape I wouldn't worry. If you have are jacked and have a lot of muscle you should be find. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

    I never worry about the BMI. High BMI is common for the bodybuilders like us and there is absolutely no need to worry about it. You have more muscle mass and that is why your weight is little more than general.

    Thanks for the input guys! After I posted the thread I have gained 8 lbs which would put me in the really, really obese catagory even though I have lost the man tits but put a half inch on my chest and lost an inch around my waist.

    I wonder what 400lb Piana would have to say about the BMI charts? No, don't tell me.........I can already imagine the language he would use!

    Despite the facts that you have told, I think BMI is a very important health indicator. I know for the bodybuilders, it does not matter but it actually matters for the newbies who are starting to shed fat and gain weight. This indicator will help those guys.

    It is a decent question. I overlook those computations that utilization weight and stature as it were. I think to get exact bmi a specialist needs to physically utilize a device.

    For a normal person BMI is quite helpful as a handy tool to assess the overall health status of his body. It is very simple to measure it. But when it comes to a bodybuilder it may not be accurate in all times. Body Mass Index takes into consideration only two factors and that are height and weight. It works on the idea that more the weight higher will be the fat content in the body. But for a professional body builder chances of over-fat are too low. It is the weight of muscles that contribute to the overweight.


    For a bodybuilder a more accurate measure would be body fat percentage. A body fat scale gives a rough idea of body fat but you can get a more accurate one with the help of fitness professional.

    I would think that some people value it more than others. I bet there are some people out there who monitor it a lot, and I know that it is really important for other sports so maybe there is some of that in there.
