Chess has its heydays when Bobby Fischer shot into the limelight by beating Russian world champion Boris Spassky. Fischer was the underdog but he was able to defeat Spassky convincingly despite his handicap in resources. There were talks that Fischer had almost a breakdown due to the dirty tactics of the Russians that included noise in the bedroom. When Karpov and Korchnoi fought for the world championship, it was still the height of world chess even if the protagonists were both Russians. And when Karpov took the crown, that started the decline of the sport’s popularity.

Yeah, chess is far from being as popular as it was in the past. Technology changed a lot the way we see sports.
