NSW man jailed for bodybuilder murder
Omar Rajab has been jailed for at least 15 years and six months over the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Hedi Ayoub at a Sydney park two years ago.

The body of alleged standover man Hedi Ayoub was found in a Sydney park on a Monday afternoon, after neighbours alerted police to the sounds of shouting and gun shots.

The 22-year-old bodybuilder had been shot four times as he tried to flee, finally killed by a hit to the neck as he sat wounded and defenceless behind a tree.

A witness would later recall hearing someone shout "Omar, Omar, don't do it".

Omar Rajab, 24, was on Friday jailed for at least 15 years and six months for the 2015 killing described by Justice Elizabeth Fullerton as "callous in the extreme".

The NSW Supreme Court had heard Rajab claimed Ayoub had threatened his family and he arranged the Punchbowl park meeting to discuss a friend's drug debt.

Rajab's friends Mohammed El Chami, 26, Bilal Allouche, 24 and his brother Ebrahim Allouche, 30, were also sentenced after pleading guilty to less serious offences.

The court heard Mr Ayoub arrived at the park with Ebrahim Allouche at about 4.30pm on June 29, with El Chami and Bilal Allouche arriving in a separate vehicle.

They were all standing outside the cars when a Rav 4 arrived and Rajab, from the passenger seat, shot Mr Ayoub in the leg and he fell to the ground.

The 22-year-old Ayoub, described by his mother as a good man who was loved by many, was followed into the park by Rajab who fired more shots.

In a statement to the court, Rajab said Mr Ayoub was a standover man who threatened him and his family after he intervened to help a friend who owed a drug debt.

He said the park meeting was organised so his friends - El Chami and the Allouche brothers - could talk with the bodybuilder to try to end the dispute while he waited nearby.

However, he panicked and shot at Mr Ayoub when it seemed he was being aggressive.

"I was genuinely scared to death of Mr Ayoub and what he could do to me and my family," Rajab said.

Justice Fullerton criticised the Crown for not cross-examining Rajab on the contents of his statement.

She said the Crown submitted he had executed a cold-blooded and calculated murder.

But the prosecutor also accepted Rajab's story - that he fired the gun out of concern for his friends - as a possible version of events.

"The crown prosecutor did not seem to appreciate that the Crown's version of the murder could not be sustained," she said.

She took into account Rajab's guilty plea, his good prospects of rehabilitation and medical reports diagnosing his intellectual disability and post traumatic stress disorder.

However, she also noted his "obvious disregard for public safety" and the community's abhorrence of the use of firearms to settle disputes.

"What cannot be overlooked is that because of his actions a young man's life has been taken," she said.

Bilal Allouche received a fixed term of six months in prison while his brother received a four-month sentence after they admitted receiving, harbouring, maintaining or assisting Rajab after the murder.

El Chami was sentenced to three months for failing to tell police that Rajab committed the killing.
