There's a lot of fighting styles and disciplines around which when combined with ground fighting styles becomes more effective and deadly.

Mix Martial Arts is a combination of stand-up fighting (Hand to hand punching and striking / kicking techniques) which includes Boxing, Karate, Taekwondo, Kungfu and others.

Combine these with Grappling, Throwing, Takedowns and Joint locking disciplines like Aikido, Hapkido, Judo, Wrestling, Jiu-jitsu resulting to a more effective fighting style, thats why it's called Mixed Martial Arts.

Bruce Lee was the first to promote mixing stand up fighting styles with ground game. Making it more effective, this was discussed in his book The Tao of Jeet June Do and other literature that he wrote.

Which Fighting disciplines do you think is the best?

For me, karate is the best fighting style because it avoids being hit. A grappler is like a judoka who strives in close quarter fighting that injury is very probable. As can be seen in Lyoto Machida, a UFC former light heavyweight champion, he is so difficult to hit with his karate style of fighting.
