The champion has only 1 loss with 25 wins and 1 draw and 13 KOs while Herring has a record of 19-2 and 10 KOs. It was an upset by the challenger to steal the WBO junior lightweight belt from Masayuki Ito by the judges decision of 118-110, 118-110, 116-112 all in favor of Herring. The deadly right hand of Ito failed to settle the score and Herring was able to display his boxing skills for the nod of the 3 judges. The fight was not really all Herring for Ito had his moments in the middle rounds although the effort was not enough.
