Kevin Custis supplied local competitive bodybuilder with prescriptions for pharmaceutical-quality anabolic steroids.
Kevin Custis, a physician with offices in Ashbury Park and Brooklyn, illegally prescribed large dosages of anabolic steroids to competitive bodybuilders without any legitimate therapeutic need. The steroids were prescribed solely and specifically for the purpose of physique enhancement.
Custis was sentenced to 27 months in prison for supplying bodybuilders with steroids by U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan on July 29, 2019. He was also fined $10,000 and given 3 years of supervised release.
Custis’ prescribing practices came to the attention of law enforcement in early 2016. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) launched an investigation spearheaded by DEA Special Agent in Charge Valerie Nickerson.

Two undercover cops pretended to be competitive physique athletes.

Two undercover police officers, who posed as competitive bodybuilders, went to his office in search of prescription anabolic steroids in April 2016. The undercover officers became patients of Custis and received multiple prescriptions for steroids over the course of the next year.
Custis prescribed every type of anabolic steroids that was currently available from American pharmacies. These included Oxandrin (oxandrolone), Anadrol (oxymetholone), Deca Durabolin (nandrolone decanoate) and testosterone cypionate.
Custis was arrested when police executed a search warrant on his home in June 2017. Police also found a whopping 4.2 kilograms of marijuana and 167 grams of THC at his home.
Custis pleaded guilty to one count of distributing anabolic steroids and one count of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute in May 2018. Custis is no longer longer permitted to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey or probably any other state for that matter.
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said at the time that Custis, in spite of his medical degree, was no different than any other drug dealer.
“Physicians who indiscriminately prescribe dangerous drugs for profit are no better than street-corner drug dealers, and we will do everything we can to protect our communities from such danger,” Grewal said.
Of course, the bodybuilders who received prescription steroids from Dr. Custis were grateful they didn’t have to resort to the dangers of obtaining and using black market steroids.
