The Wives' Club Interviews

Exclusively written for Hany Rambod’s www.fst-7.com website it is my pleasure to bring you this series of interviews with the “better halves” of very well known IFBB professional bodybuilders, appropriately titled as the “Wives’ Club Interviews”.
This series of interviews was conducted with the women who, as the cliché goes, “stand behind the men” or as I have always been inclined to put it: “stand beside their men”. These ladies are all unique and individual however, they share one common intrinsic trait. They are very strong and very understanding to say the least. Some may classify these ladies as a very rare breed in the general populace but they are commonplace in the small bodybuilding community as we know it, in the relationships that work and last anyways! The grueling and “mind altering” diets their husbands have to endure, (those of you who have done it know what I mean) in addition to the selfish schedule and dedication they have to the gym, it not only takes patience and ultra-supportiveness but strength to be able to sustain and maintain a happy home. Their husbands spend a lot of time under the spot light on many occasions showcasing their determination, effort and mind blowing physiques. It is long overdue and about time to spotlight these ladies for their endurance and dedication to their men and their relationships.
My first interview was with the very beautiful Mrs. Jennie Heath , IFBB Professional Phil Heath’s wife. For those that have been living under a rock and do not know who her husband is allow me to enlighten you. Phil is currently the third best bodybuilder in the world. This year alone, he placed third in his Olympia Debut, placed second at the Arnold Classic prior to that, and won the Ironman Pro. Not to mention that as a rookie he won his first two pro shows competing amongst outstanding seasoned veterans. Not bad for a man who has only been competing for 5 years total and only 3 years as a professional. I don’t think anyone would argue that Phil has one of the best support teams in the industry and Jennie has been there every step of the way! Now that we are all up to speed, let’s get to the interview.
FST-7: Please introduce yourself.
JH: I am Jennie Heath.
FST-7: What do you do for a living?
JH: I am a Cosmetologist
FST-7: How long have you and Phil been together?
JH: 5 ½ years
FST-7: How and where did you guys meet?
JH: I met Phil at a restaurant called Fasano’s after his second show and kidnapped him!
FST-7: Was he competing when you two first started dating?
If so, what were your first impressions?
JH: Yes, I was very impressed with his dedication and discipline.
FST-7: Do you ever get the “itch” to compete yourself after going to the shows
and seeing all the competitors?
JH: I would love to see what my body is capable of for a personal goal but as
far as competing… I would probably fall off those shoes and break my neck!
FST-7: What is the hardest thing for you to deal with during the prep?
JH: Loosing my husband for three months! Phil is a very focused athlete
so it’s pretty much all business all the time.
FST-7: What is the hardest thing for you to deal with come show time?
JH: The anticipation of the results! I feel like I carry all of Phil’s stress those
last few hours! It’s very hard to watch him on stage depleted giving it
every last bit he’s got!!!
FST-7: Do you feel pressure to look a certain way, eat a certain way or
workout due to the industry your significant other is in?
JH: I used to feel some pressure because of peoples negative comments.
I definitely live a much healthier lifestyle because of his industry, but I
am not getting on stage asking to be judged. I like to look good, feel good,
and I must be doing something right… I am Mrs. Phillip HeathJ
FST-7: So obviously Phil is a “celebrity” in this bodybuilding community
and with fame comes all kinds of stuff so let’s get into the juicy details:
FST-7: How do you deal with the fans/groupies that come around when you are
there? When you aren’t there?
JH: They can look all they want! I get to touch!!!
FST-7: Have you ever had an “incident” or encounter with a fan who was
clearly out of line or disrespectful when you were present?
JH: Of course! In Orlando two Twinkies tried putting dollar bills in Phil’s trunks.
After the show in the lobby one of the girls was walking out with her man
whom had just finished competing and we were packing up his booth when
I heard him ask her if she had any money for a water, as she was digging in
her purse I politely told her that it was a good thing she had hung on to
those ones!!
FST-7: How do you feel about/handle the not so nice remarks or opinions about
Phil written on the boards or in magazines or said on the radio?
JH: If they are critiquing his physique, well isn’t that what this sport is all
about? Everyone has an opinion. If it is a personal attack, then they must
not know him because he’s pretty terrific!
FST-7: How do you deal with all the travelling and the sometimes grueling
schedule your spouse has?
JH: I feel very fortunate that we get the chance to go so many cool places.
I have a pretty busy schedule so if I can’t go it just gives me a chance to
miss him!( I do get a little cranky if it’s a long trip.)
FST-7: Where do you see your lives in 5-10 years?
JH: In a perfect world Mr. O will be my baby’s daddy! Oh and they will have his eyes!!!!
I want to take the opportunity here to thank Mrs. Heath again for taking the time to answer my questions and for providing very honest answers. This concludes part 1 of this series, next month I will be interviewing Christine Achkar-Coleman, eight-time Mr. Olympia’s wife. Stay tuned!
