Seeing as we're doing the movie threads. What do people think are the best movie openings and endings - they don't have to be in the same film. The ending doesn't necessarily have to be a "twist" ending, just satisfying.
Off the top of my head:
Cliffhanger - For the unexpectedness of seeing Stallone's character fall which worked because it was not only unexpected at the beginning of the film but also due to Stallone and how everyone perceives him as the "action hero" therefore he'd never let her fall! So it worked by using everyone preconceptions of the characters Stallone plays.
Saving Private Ryan - Saw this at the cinema and (Schindlers List asiade) Speilberg always does family films, and when the opening scenes unfolded unrelentlessly as they do and seeing it on the big screen with the sound so loud was mindblowing. Incredible technical achievement. (The end scenes are often overshadowed by the opening scenes but are equally, if not more harrowing due to the fact you're more invested in the characters by then)
The Sixth Sense - Not the best film by any mean but the twist end really is a "Oh my God", and when you see the flashbacks and realise it's really clever (although the holes exist). 'Unbreakable' also has a good end but not many people liked this film - me included on firt watch - because everyone wanted another 6th sense.
I'll come back to endings - there are better ones than this but can't think off the top of my head.
