After two of its players were discovered to have used illegal drugs, the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) has chosen to eliminate bodybuilding from the 2023 Southeast Asian Games roster.
CAMSOC's decision to ban bodybuilding was revealed at a press conference held on Tuesday at the CBFF headquarters in Phnom Penh.
Bodybuilding was one of the 38 categories chosen for the upcoming SEA Games, which Cambodia will host.
The Cambodian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (CBFF) head, Tek Bunvy, announced that two of his players, Phann Narith and Seang Meng Sang, were discovered to have taken steroids during the 3rd National Games.
Steroids are performance-enhancing substances that immediately affect muscular mass, among other things. However, its usage has several hazards, including infertility.
The 3rd National Games, the largest local sporting event, were held in Phnom Penh from November 21 to 30, 2022.
"They confessed their error and apologized to us. "However, the harm has already been done," he noted. "I am sorry that this occurred. Our other players would now be unable to compete in the SEA Games."
Bunvy stated that the Federation has suffered as a result of the situation.
"Our players have worked extremely hard in preparation for both local and international events. "We are quite disheartened," he stated emphatically.
Bunvy stated that they had requested assistance from CAMSOC for the bodybuilding squad to compete in future SEA Games.
"We want the other guys who did not commit the same offense to be able to show off their abilities and compete against other bodybuilders in the region," he explained.
Cambodia has sent four bodybuilders to the SEA Games in Vietnam in 2021. However, according to local media, they won no medals.
