Tonya Knight died at the age of 56 on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, according to reports. Although no cause of death has been determined, she was thought to be suffering from cancer.
Knight, who was born in Missouri before migrating to Kansas, was gifted in a variety of disciplines from a young age. Her outstanding physique and hard ethic helped her make a reputation for herself on the bodybuilding scene. Because of her remarkable conditioning, she delivered a terrific package to the stage.
Tonya Knight first appeared on the forefront in 1984, when she competed in the NPC World Championships. Over the next three years, she would become a fixture in the tournament before moving on to the IFBB Pro League.
In 1988, Knight finished sixth in the Pro World Championships before finishing fourth in Women's Bodybuilding. Knight took a break after winning Ms. International in 1989 due to a scandal surrounding one of her drug tests.
Tonya Knight returned to the stage in 1991, winning Ms. International for the second time. She would race twice more in her career, finishing third in the Jan Tana Classic in 1993.
Tonya Knight died on February 7th, at the age of 56. She fought cancer for a long period, finally succumbing to it.
Sharon Bruneau, the former co-host of America's Next Great Trainer, paid homage to Knight on Facebook, noting that the bodybuilding community has lost a wonderful young girl. She wrote, stating that Knight was an inspiration to thousands of people:
“Sorry we never got to do that shoot Tonya, thankyou for all the love and support over the years. Heaven truly has gained an amazing Angel. My deep sincere condolences to her son, Malachi, family and friends. Big Love my Iron Sister. Fly high sweet Angel.”
