It is using a stretch reflex of the muscles and connective tissues so you are actually able to protect the joints more than a stop and go. But I'm still not a fan of hard bouncing that has the hamstrings mashing against the calves under large loads and velocities. You are putting a lever strain on the ligaments of the knee. The patella tendon and the patella will take the brunt of this, but patella knee problems aren't uncommon in weightlifters during high training phases.
