After Five Years Away, Conor McGregor Finally Returns at UFC 329

After nearly five years away from competition, Conor McGregor is officially set to make his long-awaited return to the Octagon at UFC 329. The former two-division UFC champion will headline one of the biggest events of 2026 when he faces Max Holloway in a highly anticipated rematch at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 11, during International Fight Week.

The comeback marks McGregor's first appearance since suffering a devastating leg injury against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. Since then, fans have waited through injuries, canceled fights, and speculation surrounding his future. Now, one of mixed martial arts' biggest stars is finally ready to step back into the cage.

A Five-Year Journey Back to the Octagon

Conor McGregor Comeback

McGregor's last UFC fight ended heartbreakingly. During his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier, he suffered a broken lower tibia that forced the contest to end after the first round. The injury required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process that kept him out of active competition for almost five years.

Throughout his recovery, McGregor remained one of the sport's most recognizable figures. He coached on The Ultimate Fighter, expanded his business ventures, and repeatedly teased a return. However, several comeback plans, including a previously scheduled fight with Michael Chandler, never materialized due to injury setbacks.

Now, after 1,800-plus days away from competition, the Irish superstar is finally ready to compete again.

Why UFC 329 Is One of the Biggest Events of the Year

UFC 329 is expected to be among the promotion's most successful pay-per-view events of 2026. Scheduled during International Fight Week in Las Vegas, the event features a stacked lineup, but all attention is centered on McGregor's return.

The event will take place at T-Mobile Arena, a venue that has hosted many memorable UFC championship fights. With McGregor headlining, expectations for ticket sales, global viewership, and PPV purchases are exceptionally high.

Max Holloway Awaits in the Main Event

Instead of facing Michael Chandler, McGregor will now meet Max Holloway in a rematch over a decade in the making. Their first meeting occurred in 2013, when a rising McGregor defeated Holloway by unanimous decision despite reportedly tearing his ACL during the fight.

Connor McGregor vs Max Holloway at UFC 329

Much has changed since then.

Holloway has become one of the UFC's most accomplished fighters, earning championship gold and establishing himself as one of the sport's greatest volume strikers. The rematch offers Holloway an opportunity to avenge one of the earliest defeats of his UFC career while testing McGregor after years of inactivity.

Can McGregor Overcome Ring Rust?

The biggest question surrounding McGregor's return is whether five years away from competition will affect his performance.

Extended layoffs often lead to concerns about:

  • Ring rust
  • Timing and reaction speed
  • Cardio over five rounds
  • Confidence after a major injury
  • Ability to absorb damage
McGregor, however, remains characteristically confident. In recent interviews, he predicted a dominant performance against Holloway, insisting he only needs one clean shot to finish the fight.

Whether that confidence translates into victory remains one of UFC 329's biggest storylines.

Inside McGregor's Fight Camp

Reports leading into UFC 329 suggest McGregor has been fully committed to training as he prepares for his comeback. Recent images from training camp have shown him appearing in excellent physical condition just weeks before the event.

After years focused on rehabilitation, this training camp has emphasized:

  • Restoring explosive striking ability
  • Building endurance
  • Injury prevention
  • Technical preparation for Holloway's pace and volume
Avoiding training camp injuries has been particularly important after previous comeback attempts were delayed.

What Is at Stake?

Although this is not a championship fight, the implications are enormous.

A victory would immediately place McGregor back among the UFC's biggest attractions and could open opportunities within both the lightweight and welterweight divisions.

A loss, however, would raise serious questions about whether the former champion can still compete against elite opposition after such a lengthy absence.

For Holloway, defeating McGregor would represent another career-defining achievement and erase the memory of their first encounter.

Massive Business Impact for the UFC

Few fighters generate attention like Conor McGregor.

His return has already become the centerpiece of UFC 329's promotional campaign. Analysts expect the event to produce one of the largest gates and pay-per-view audiences of the year, reinforcing McGregor's value to the promotion despite his extended absence.

The fight card has experienced a few late changes because of injuries to other competitors, but McGregor's main event against Holloway remains unchanged.

Prediction

Connor McGregor

McGregor's greatest weapon has always been his precision striking and knockout power. Holloway, meanwhile, possesses elite durability, relentless pace, and championship experience.

If McGregor can find his timing early, his power makes him dangerous against anyone. However, if the fight extends into the later rounds, Holloway's activity and conditioning could become decisive factors.

The matchup is difficult to predict precisely because McGregor has been away for nearly five years. His talent is unquestioned, but the effects of such a long absence remain unknown until the opening bell.

Final Thoughts

After nearly five years away from competition, Conor McGregor's return at UFC 329 represents one of the biggest moments in modern mixed martial arts. His rematch with Max Holloway brings together two of the sport's biggest names in a contest filled with history, intrigue, and enormous stakes.

For McGregor, UFC 329 is more than just another fight—it's an opportunity to prove he still belongs among the UFC elite after years away from the Octagon. For Holloway, it's a chance to rewrite history against the man who defeated him at the start of his UFC journey.

Regardless of the outcome, UFC 329 promises to deliver one of the most anticipated comeback stories the sport has seen in years.

I'm just happy it's finally happening. Whether you're a McGregor fan or not, five years away from the cage is a lifetime in MMA. The sport keeps moving, and Max isn't the same young guy Conor beat back in 2013. He's had wars, won titles, and evolved into one of the most durable, high-volume strikers we've ever seen.

My biggest question isn't Conor's left hand—we already know that's dangerous. It's whether he can keep the pace if this gets into the third round. Ring rust is real, especially after that long layoff and the leg injury. Holloway has made a career out of drowning people with volume once they start slowing down.

If Conor comes out looking sharp and gets the finish early, it'll be one of the biggest comeback stories the UFC has seen. If not, I could see Max taking over as the fight wears on. Either way, it's one of those matchups I'll be glued to from the opening bell.

I’ve watched long enough to know layoffs like this can go either way, but if Conor actually shows up healthy, this is way more interesting than people give it credit for. That said, five years out is brutal at this level. Max has been active the whole time, so I’m more curious about Conor’s timing and cardio than the old highlights.

Five years is a long time in this sport, and Holloway isn't the same guy Conor beat back in 2013. I'm just curious which version of McGregor actually shows up after all this time away. If he's even close to his old timing, it'll be a fun fight.
