Alex Pereira Speaks Out on Controversial Back of the Head Shots From Ciryl Gane

The controversy surrounding Ciryl Gane's victory over Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250 continues to dominate headlines, with the former two-division champion now publicly criticizing both Gane and veteran referee Herb Dean.

What initially appeared to be a spectacular finish has evolved into one of the most debated stoppages in recent UFC history. Multiple replay angles showed several strikes landing in questionable areas during Gane's finishing sequence, prompting widespread discussion among fighters, analysts, and fans alike.

Alex Pereira Speaks Out on Controversial Back of the Head Shots From Ciryl Gane

From Glory to Debate

Alex Pereira's ambitious attempt to become the UFC's first-ever champion in three different weight classes ended dramatically when Ciryl Gane stopped him in the second round to capture the interim heavyweight title at UFC Freedom 250.

However, the aftermath of the bout has overshadowed Gane's victory. Pereira believes repeated illegal strikes to the back of his head significantly affected the outcome of the fight, and he has not hesitated to voice his frustration publicly. The controversy has reignited debates regarding fighter safety and the consistency of officiating in mixed martial arts.

What Happened During the Finishing Sequence?

The pivotal moment came early in Round 2 when Gane stunned Pereira with a powerful jab. As Pereira fell to the canvas and attempted to defend himself, Gane unleashed a barrage of follow-up strikes.

Almost immediately, fans and analysts noticed that several elbows and punches appeared to land on or near the back of Pereira's head. Slow-motion replays circulated widely across social media, with many observers questioning why referee Herb Dean allowed the action to continue without issuing a warning or pausing the fight.

Alex Pereira Blasts the Officiating

Pereira did not mince words in his post-fight comments.

In a video posted to social media, the Brazilian star claimed the illegal strikes prevented him from recovering after being dropped. Pereira argued that referee Herb Dean failed in his duty to protect fighters and suggested the veteran official should face consequences for missing the fouls. He even revealed that he had raised concerns about Gane's previous controversial incidents during the pre-fight rules meeting.

Pereira stated that while Gane's initial punch hurt him, the strikes to the back of the head were what truly compromised his ability to continue. He later released photographs showing visible swelling and abrasions on the back of his head, which he claims were caused by illegal blows.

Herb Dean Responds to the Criticism

Following days of criticism, veteran referee Herb Dean addressed the controversy publicly.

Dean explained that under the Unified Rules of MMA, the illegal area is not the entire rear portion of the head. Instead, the prohibited zone primarily covers the area around the base of the skull and the narrow "mohawk" strip extending upward from the neck. According to Dean, many of Gane's strikes landed legally on the side or rear-side portions of Pereira's head.

Dean acknowledged that some strikes may have appeared questionable in real time, but maintained that his officiating was consistent with current rules and guidelines.

Other Fighters Weigh In

The MMA community remains divided.

Former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski publicly sided with Pereira after reviewing the footage. Volkanovski stated that multiple strikes made direct contact with prohibited areas and argued that Dean should have intervened during the finishing sequence. While Volkanovski believes Gane likely would have won regardless, he still feels the illegal shots may have accelerated the finish.

Interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall also questioned the legality of several strikes while watching the replay, describing some of the elbows as "very illegal."

Meanwhile, many fans and analysts have argued that only one or two strikes clearly landed illegally, noting that rapid finishing exchanges often create difficult situations for referees. The disagreement highlights the ongoing ambiguity surrounding the enforcement of the back-of-the-head rule.

Will Pereira Appeal the Result?

According to multiple reports, Pereira and his team have explored the possibility of appealing the result. Although overturning UFC fight outcomes remains extremely rare, Pereira has indicated that he wants greater accountability regarding officiating standards rather than simply changing the official result.

At this stage, no official appeal ruling has been announced.

Final Thoughts

What should have been remembered as Ciryl Gane's biggest career victory has instead become one of the most controversial finishes of 2026.

Alex Pereira's criticism has intensified scrutiny on referee accountability, the interpretation of illegal strikes, and overall fighter safety. While opinions remain split on whether the alleged fouls changed the outcome, the incident has exposed lingering inconsistencies in how MMA's rules are interpreted and enforced.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the UFC and athletic commissions may face increasing pressure to improve officiating standards and potentially expand the use of replay during fight-ending sequences.

Controversial shots like that aren't just about the immediate result of the fight; they're about the cumulative neurological load. Pereira is a beast, but even the best chins have a 'mileage' limit.

From a recovery standpoint, what these fighters do in the 48 hours post-trauma is critical. We’re seeing more elite combat camps looking into things like Cerebrolysin or high-dose Omega-3s (EPA/DHA) to mitigate the neuro-inflammatory cascade following shots to the occipital region.

If you aren't managing the brain's inflammatory response immediately after a controversial exchange like that, you're looking at long-term issues with equilibrium and reaction time. Combat sports are moving into a 'neuro-protection' era, and guys like Pereira who fight frequently need that protocol dialed in more than anyone.

I watched the finish several times and honestly i can see both sides of the argument.

Gane was clearly taking over the fight but a few strikes did look close to the back of the head. I think Pereira has every right to ask for more consistency from the officials.
