With 5.5 weeks to go until the 2026 Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio, Mike Sommerfeld and coach Neil Hill pulled back the curtain on one of the most challenging contest preps of their careers during this Y3T pull session.

Following the Olympia, Mike entered a structured health phase. Blood work looked strong, but extensive travel through Mexico, Rome, Malaysia, and Bali led to repeated food poisoning and bacterial infections. Multiple hospital visits, IV treatments, dehydration, and a 15-pound drop on a single flight left his digestion compromised. Eventually, testing revealed several bacterial strains, forcing the team to combine a three-week antibiotic protocol with active contest prep.

That decision changed everything.

Carbohydrate tolerance dropped. Digestion struggled. Water retention increased. Mentally and physically, Mike felt flat, slow, and depleted. Neil explained that the gut-brain connection and medication side effects impacted dopamine levels, affecting mood and performance. At 5.5 weeks out, Mike’s conditioning is not where past preps have been, but the team views this as a strategic obstacle, not a setback.

Recently, they reintroduced higher carb days, pushing intake to 550 grams, then tapering to 350 grams. The result was immediate improvement in fullness, strength, and training output. Extra reps and better pumps signaled improved nutrient absorption as gut health stabilizes.

Training remains Y3T-based with push-pull splits and split AM/PM sessions to increase stimulus while managing caloric deficit. Cardio is being strategically increased through daily steps and controlled output rather than excessive traditional cardio. Nutrition, supplementation, and stimulus are being adjusted almost daily based on feedback, physique response, and performance metrics.

The focus now is clear: build a polished, 3D classic bodybuilding look from every angle. A few pounds must come off, but the goal is fullness, hardness, and round muscle density, not just scale weight.

Neil emphasized that overcoming adversity builds stronger athletes. This prep has forced new lessons in digestion, recovery, metabolic management, and mental resilience.

Five and a half weeks remain. The deficit tightens. The stimulus sharpens. The mission stays locked in: bring a championship-level package back to the Arnold Classic stage.
