A Ramsbottom father was discovered dead at work after ingesting steroids and cocaine.

After 31-year-old Ben Campbell was discovered slumped behind the vehicle on the morning of November 11, last year, paramedics were rushed to the building site of a new dwelling development in Bleacher Close. Ben, a bodybuilder who was known to use anabolic steroids, was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. despite efforts to revive him.

Ben, who was born in Bury and resided in Ramsbottom, had purchased the steroids from a bodybuilding shop, according to an inquest conducted today (March 29) at Preston Coroner's Court. Anabolic steroids are Class C medications that, according to UK legislation, may only be prescribed by pharmacists.

"Mr. Campbell had arrived at work on November 11 at 7.30 in the morning and approximately 20 minutes later a colleague observed him slumped over the wheel of a digger truck unconscious. He was evacuated from the vehicle and CPR was begun but death was confirmed at9 amm," Area Coroner Richard Taylor said.

"He had begun using steroids acquired from a bodybuilding store." He appeared OK the night before."

Anabolic steroids are synthetic testosterone derivatives that are often used without medical supervision to increase muscle growth or athletic performance. Steroid-induced muscle development is achievable even without exercising, and there are an estimated three million users in Europe.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Tom Edmondson stated in a report that information he received indicated that Ben had taken steroids the night before. "On the morning of his death, he was driving a digger bringing soil over and he was told it wasn't needed at that time," .Mr Taylor read from the statement.

"He parked up and when he was next seen he was slumped over the wheel."

Ben died on November 11, 2022, at the Spring Wells building site in Bleacher Close, Whitworth, from a cardiac event caused by the ingestion of cocaine and steroids, according post-mortemtem investigations. The coroner returned a conclusion of misadventure and stated: "Benjamin David Campbell died on November 11, 2022, at the Spring Wells building site in Bleacher Close, Whitworth, from a cardiac event following the ingestion of cocaine and steroids."
