Energy drink is very popular here because it is endorsed by athletes. But one doctor who ran for a senate seat said that energy drinks can have side effects that can harm the kidneys. He said that if you need energy then do it with added exercise and not the artificial energy that you get from energy drinks.

Energy drinks are created to deliver caffeine and other stimulants to the drinkers which increase their adrenaline level thereby making them more alert. Also, this drink contains an amino acid, taurine that may boost performance level during exercise but does not help rehydrate the body. Not enough fluid the body might cause dry eyes, thirst, dry mouth, and muscle cramps.

They are also popular in my country. You are right, energy drinks can lead to kidney damage. Although it's a rare case.
