Anyone who has been into professional bodybuilding for a while knows that the Chicago Pro often goes against what people expect. People may not always pay as much attention to this show as they do to the Mr. Olympia or the Arnold Classic, but true fans know how crazy this competition can get.

One night can change an athlete's whole future. A competitor can go in as a big underdog and leave with a spot in the Olympia, big funding offers, and more respect from the fans and judges.

That's fun about watching the Chicago Pro. You're not always seeing well-known names win in expected ways. At times, you can see unknown athletes at their best while bigger stars miss the mark. Sometimes, judges make choices that fans don't agree with, and they argue about them for weeks. No matter what, the show is known for surprising people in ways they'll never forget.

Biggest upsets in Chicago Pro history

Why the Chicago Pro Has Produced Major Upsets

Because of when it takes place, the Chicago Pro always has upset potential because it's so important for athletes trying to qualify for Olympia. Many of the competitors come into this event having almost won earlier in the season. It makes the lineups much deeper and more dangerous than fans might think.

Everything changes because of that pressure. In order to be at their best, athletes often make big changes to their carbs, water, and salt intake in the last week of the competition. Those choices work out great sometimes. At other times, they work against you and let someone else in.

Trends in judging are also still changing across categories. In the Men's Open, size alone isn't enough to win today if you're not in good shape. Athletes' symmetry, appearance, and polish can have a big effect on where they place in Classic Physique and Bikini Olympia qualifying events. When you add in hungry newcomers who want to make a name for themselves, you have everything you need for big shocks.

Surprise Winners Who Shocked Men's Open Fans

There have been some of the most memorable wins in the Chicago Pro in the Men's Open division. A big win for Hunter Labrada changed the way people saw his future right away, which was one of the best examples. Many people admired his genes because his father is Lee Labrada, but many fans still thought that more experienced competitors would beat him. Instead, he was smart, even, and ready to take advantage.

Blessing Awodibu also shocked everyone when he came through after years of online hype with a real win. Some people doubted that his physique would help him compete with the best, but his success put a lot of those doubters to rest.

A lot of last-minute entries have also totally changed what people thought would happen in Chicago. A person can spend weeks researching possible opponents, only to find out that one of them joined late but is now at their peak. Fans and players are always on edge because things can go in any direction.

Classic Physique Upsets That Changed Division Narratives

Because judges often look at smaller details, the Classic Physique division has seen some interesting shocks. Veterans with well-known names have come in as favorites only to lose to newcomers with better looks and a better presentation.

Terrence Ruffin changed the way people talked about how important it was to pose and show. Fans saw that winning isn't always about having the most muscle by watching him play to his skills.

Athletes like Urs Kalecinski showed that balance and flow can often beat bodies that depend on mass. Fans are always arguing about these results because they don't agree on what the judges should focus on, which makes the split even more dramatic.

Bikini and Women's Division Shockers

The results of the women's classes have also been nothing short of shocking. Athletes often go to Chicago thinking they will have an easy time qualifying, but they end up facing stronger teams than they thought.

Jennifer Dorie shows how quickly a big win can make a person's job better. Unexpected winners have often come out on top with better fitness, stage presence, and confidence than the veterans that most people thought would win.

Changing views on how to judge also cause uncertainty. Changes in the ideal level of fitness and presenting standards can have a huge impact on results, especially in bikini. Winners for the first time often cause the biggest surprises because they quickly qualify for the Olympics and mess up the rankings.

Controversial Judging Decisions That Divided Fans

Controversial judging decisions may lead to long-lasting arguments, and everybody knows this; the Chicago Pro has had its share of those debates. Social media will often explode on tight decisions within minutes of the outcome being announced, as supporters break down scorecards and share side-by-side comparisons.

Some viewers have slammed the judges for playing favorites with some contestants, while others say that tight calls are just a measure of the competition the program has become. More controversy comes from comparisons to judging choices at the Arnold Classic and Mr. Olympia.

These disputes might have lifelong ramifications. Some athletes use disappointing losses as motivation and come back more improved. Others find it hard to restore momentum after feeling they earned better rankings.

How Chicago Pro Upsets Have Changed Careers

A victory in the Chicago Pro can unlock opportunities that athletes have been striving for years. Olympia qualification immediately raises visibility and puts competitors in front of a much wider audience.

That exposure can translate into sponsorship opportunities with the likes of Gymshark, Raw Nutrition, and Hosstile. Frequently, the expansion of social media, media interviews, and more fan recognition comes.

Even losing athletes can gain in the long run. Those losses reveal vulnerabilities they may address before the next tournament. The continuing series of unexpected triumphs, gut-wrenching losses, and career reinventions is exactly why the Chicago Pro is one of bodybuilding's most unpredictable tournaments.

You can come in as the favorite and go away empty-handed. You may walk in, unnoticed, and walk out as the newest breakout star. That's what keeps the fans watching, and that's what keeps the Chicago Pro dishing out some of bodybuilding's biggest shocks.

The Chicago Pro always reminds me that being the favorite doesn't guarantee anything. Peak conditioning on the right day can flip the whole lineup.

That's why I never skip the Chicago Pro. Every year someone comes out of nowhere and completely changes the Olympia conversation.
