On February 26–28, 1972, the 2nd (unofficial) USSR Bodybuilding Championship was held in Severodvinsk.
The 1st championship had also taken place in February 1971 in the same city. From that moment on, a tradition began of gathering the best Soviet bodybuilders in this northern city.
In 1971, the absolute champion of the USSR was Severodvinsk athlete Alexander Lemekhov. Second place was taken by Vladimir Dubinin from Leningrad, and third place by Vladimir Khomulev, also from Severodvinsk.
In 1972, the USSR Championship was divided into strength disciplines and bodybuilding competitions. In organizing bodybuilding events, Soviet officials followed the same approach that had been used in Czechoslovakia and adopted the competition rules accepted there.
Teams representing the following cities took part in the USSR Championship: Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Severodvinsk, Kazan, Tallinn, Vilnius, Riga, Zaporozhye, Astrakhan, Voronezh, Kalinin, Kaliningrad, Saratov, Brest, and Yakutsk.
The strength competition program consisted of the bench press and the barbell squat. The winners received gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as diplomas, prizes, and trophies.
On the second day, competitions in muscular development and free posing routines were held. However, before that, each participant had to meet a swimming standard: swimming 50 meters freestyle in no more than 45 seconds. Failure to meet this requirement resulted in a reduction of points for muscular development and the free routine.
In the morning session, athletes performed their free routines and were compared in terms of muscular development. All events were conducted in accordance with the competition rules of the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB).

From February 26-28, 1972, the city of Severodvinsk hosted the 2nd USSR Bodybuilding Championships (unofficial). The first championships were also held in February 1971 in the same city. This event began the tradition of meeting the best Soviet bodybuilders in this northern city.
In 1971, Severodvinsk athlete Alexander Lemekhov became the absolute USSR champion, with Vladimir Dubinin from Leningrad taking second place, and Vladimir Khomulev from Severodvinsk taking third.
