Competitive bodybuilding prep rarely goes perfectly, and Episode 4 of this prep series shows the reality many athletes face behind the scenes. The bodybuilder reveals a serious setback during contest preparation: a bulged disc at L4–L5 that is pressing on a nerve in the lower back.
After experiencing what initially felt like a minor back issue, the problem worsened significantly following training. A visit for deep tissue treatment was followed by severe pain that forced him to spend most of the week resting in bed. An MRI confirmed the injury, identifying a disc bulge between the L4 and L5 vertebrae that triggers nerve pain whenever the area becomes inflamed.
Despite the diagnosis, prep continues.
Instead of stopping training completely, he adapts his workouts to protect the injured lower back. Hip hinge movements such as heavy rows and deadlift variations are removed. In their place, chest-supported machines and controlled movements allow him to continue training his back muscles while minimizing stress on the spine.
Key adjustments include:
• Chest-supported rows to remove pressure from the lower back • Upright lat pulldown positioning instead of leaning back • Light weights with slow, controlled reps • Eliminating twisting and hip-hinge exercises • Focusing on elbow drive and lat activation
These changes allow him to maintain intensity while protecting the injured area.
The athlete is also consulting a top spinal surgeon to determine whether future treatment or intervention may be needed. For now, the goal is simple: manage the injury and stay consistent through the remaining weeks of prep.
Physically, the progress is still strong.
He currently weighs 221.8 pounds, which is significantly lighter than the same point in last year's prep when he weighed around 244 pounds. That places him roughly 20 pounds ahead of schedule, allowing for a more gradual and controlled fat loss phase instead of the extreme dieting required previously.
Calories remain relatively high compared to last year's prep, helping maintain energy levels while continuing to drop body fat steadily. The coach’s immediate target is reaching 220 pounds, after which a brief increase in food intake may occur before continuing the final fat loss phase.
With 12 weeks remaining until competition, the focus is on staying consistent, protecting the back, and maintaining muscle fullness while continuing the gradual weight drop.
Even with a serious back injury, the prep mindset remains unchanged: adapt, push forward, and bring the best physique possible to the stage.
