@2quantify - you need to take a grip on the bar such that it is comfortable yet narrow so that you create a shelf with your traps and scapular for the bar to rest on. This is either a high bar (on top of the traps across the back of the shoulder) or low bar (across the back of the shoulder).

To do this also requires a more solid upper body position and a firm grip on the bar.
