In a recent episode of Ask Dave on RXMuscle, Dave Palumbo tackled one of the most controversial topics in modern bodybuilding: if there were one drug that should be banned from the sport, what would it be?

The discussion came during a wide-ranging Q&A covering steroids, peptides, training myths, and the upcoming 2026 Arnold Classic. While many fans assume certain anabolic steroids are ruining today’s physiques, Palumbo offered a different perspective.

According to him, most anabolic steroids themselves are not the real problem. Drugs like testosterone, trenbolone, and other common compounds can be used responsibly and have been part of bodybuilding for decades. When used correctly, they help athletes build muscle, strength, and recovery without necessarily harming the aesthetic look of a physique.

However, Palumbo pointed to one compound he believes should never be used in bodybuilding.

That drug is DNP.

DNP (2,4-Dinitrophenol) is an extremely dangerous fat-loss chemical that dramatically increases the body’s metabolic rate by disrupting cellular energy production. While it can burn fat quickly, it also raises body temperature and can push the body into a dangerous state of overheating. In severe cases, it has been linked to organ failure and death.

Palumbo made it clear that DNP offers no real advantage that safer methods cannot achieve. In his view, the risk far outweighs any possible benefit. For that reason, if he had the authority to ban a single substance from bodybuilding, DNP would be the one.

He also emphasized that the real issue in today’s bodybuilding culture is not necessarily a specific drug, but excessive “polypharmacy.” Many athletes stack large numbers of steroids, peptides, and experimental compounds without fully understanding how they interact. In many cases, only a few of those substances actually provide meaningful results.

Palumbo’s advice is simple. Use fewer compounds, understand the science behind them, and avoid the temptation to throw every new peptide or drug into a cycle.

Outside the drug discussion, the episode also covered several other bodybuilding topics. Palumbo discussed the similarities between testosterone enanthate and testosterone cypionate, explaining that both long-acting esters perform almost identically when injected multiple times per week. He also talked about growth hormone usage, recommending lower doses over long periods rather than very high doses that can create insulin resistance.

Another interesting point focused on training myths. Palumbo argued that one of the most common mistakes bodybuilders make is training weak body parts too often. Instead, he believes lagging muscles often need more recovery time, not more volume.

As always, the RXMuscle Ask Dave show mixed practical bodybuilding advice with behind-the-scenes talk about the industry. The episode also previewed the upcoming 2026 Arnold Classic coverage from Columbus, Ohio, where RXMuscle planned interviews, livestreams, and athlete analysis throughout the weekend.

For fans of bodybuilding, steroid education, and contest coverage, this episode delivered a blunt reminder from Palumbo: drugs are tools, but abusing them or using dangerous compounds like DNP can turn bodybuilding into a health gamble.
