According to court records, a Canadian Instagram star and bodybuilder was charged with six felony charges of having a dangerous drug without a prescription after police said they linked her to a shipment containing steroids.
According to an arrest document acquired by Insider, the Martin County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations team in Florida reported Melissa Kate Bumstead possessed six different banned narcotics, including the anabolic steroid medicines testosterone propionate and drostanolone propionate.
Bumstead, 30, is a professional bodybuilder who uploads fitness photos on Instagram under the name Melissa Valliere and the account @melissabum, where she has over 105,000 followers and routinely receives over 10,000 likes on posts.
According to the arrest affidavit submitted by Florida state prosecutors, Bumstead was in possession of the anabolic steroids trenbolone acetate, oxandrolone, mesterolone, and stanozolol, in addition to testosterone and drostanolone.
Professional bodybuilders and other athletes have a long history of utilizing anabolic steroids as part of their training programs to increase their power.
According to a summary of her athletic background on the bodybuilding website Arnold Sports Festival, Bumstead took first place in the 2018 Tampa Pro Figure competition and was runner-up in the 2018 Los Angeles Pro Figure competition. In 2015, she took first place in the figure category at the national championship of the Canada Bodybuilding Federation.
The athlete was apprehended on Friday in Palm City, Florida, after Martin County Sheriff's Office investigators executed a search warrant on a residence they suspected belonged to CBUM Holdings Account LLC. According to the affidavit, Bumstead's brother, Christopher Bumstead, is the holding company's registered agent.
Christopher, who has over 3.5 million Instagram followers, is also a professional bodybuilder and the two-time reigning Classic Physique Olympia bodybuilding competition winner. Christopher did not reply to an inquiry from Insider.
According to the affidavit, the investigation began on September 1, when a box in Memphis, Tennessee, in the process of being delivered from Montreal to Palm City, was "selected for an extensive exam" by US Customs and Border Protection. The box addressed to Melissa contained vials and packets of steroids and other prescription drugs, according to officials.
According to the affidavit, a Homeland Security Investigations officer contacted the Martin County Special Investigation Section about the item on September 8, and on September 9, Martin County authorities began investigating the box and Melissa.
According to the complaint, a detective "covertly delivered" the gift to its targeted delivery address on Friday, with a tracking device inserted within the package to provide notifications when someone opened it. Investigators discovered evidence on Melissa's hands indicating she had opened the package while carrying out the search warrant, according to the affidavit.
Melissa was arrested into the Martin County jail on Friday, with bond set at $30,000, according to a representative for the Martin County Sheriff's Office. According to the local news site TCPalm, she was freed on Saturday. It was unclear when she was next scheduled to appear in court.
