FIDE, the world chess federation, had inducted Filipino Eugene Torre into the World Chess Hall of Fame. He was joined by woman chess wizard Hungarian Judith Polgar and blindfold chess master Miguel Najdorf of Argentina. Torre is the first Asian grandmaster and he is the first Asian man to be in the hall of fame. In 1972 Torre won over world champion Anatoly Karpov in a small tournament held in the Philippines.
