As a young man back about 1960 I started weight training and was introduced to a community of athletes that included weightlifters, bodybuilders, powerlifters, and people who did it all. They were a community. There was, however, some commercial forces who loved the profits they could make off it. They seemed to believe that profits demanded that they neglect some aspects of the iron game. I am willing to bet that the majority of people working out with weights want to reap all the benefits and are more inspired by people like Grimek, Kono, Anderson,Terpak, Sandow, and Dandurand. Can we talk about this aspect of the sport? Weightlifters use supplements too. Think of Anderson, Hepburn, and Bruce Randall. Don't forget that Hoffman did well catering to the whole Sport.
