How can I improve my cardio before starting MMA classes?

Anybody here?

So here's the thing. I'm planning to start MMA classes soon but I'm a little worried about my cardio. I can handle regular workouts but I know MMA is a different story, esp when you're moving around constantly and trying not to gas out after a few rounds. 😂

I'm thinking of doing some running and jump rope before joining a gym, just to get my stamina up. For those of you who train MMA, what worked best for you when you were starting out? Should I focus on running, HIIT, or something else?

Any tips would be really appreciated!

Do 2-3 easy runs a week for your base, then add interval work like 3-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest, since that’s closest to how a fight or sparring round feels.

Focus less on pure cardio volume and more on learning how to relax under pressure, because gassing out as a beginner usually comes from tensing up and wasting all your energy in the first two minutes.

Don’t go 100% in every drill. Pace yourself like it’s a 15-minute workout, not a 3-minute sprint, and you’ll still be moving when the last round comes.

I'd say just start the MMA classes instead of waiting until your cardio is better. Running and jump rope will help, but there's a different kind of exhaustion when you're trying to throw punches, defend takedowns, and remember what your coach just taught you lol.

I'd mix some easy running for endurance with jump rope for footwork and coordination. No need to go crazy with HIIT right away since MMA classes will already give you plenty of intense work.

Biggest tip is to learn how to relax and breathe properly. Beginners tend to tense up and waste a ton of energy, especially when grappling. You'll probably gas out in your first few classes regardless, and that's pretty normal.
