IBF middleweight title - Sergiy Derevyanchenko vs. Gennady Golovkin

The vacant IBF middleweight title is up for grabs between former champion Gennady Golovkin and Sergiy Derevyanchenko on October 5 at the Madison Square Garden in New York. The title was vacated by Canelo Alvarez by failing to defend it and moving to the light heavyweight division. Both fighters have only 1 loss, with Golovkin losing to Canelo while Derevyanchenko lost by split decision to Daniel Jacobs.

It was a grueling 12 rounds except for the knockdown in the 1st round. It seems that GGG was able to escape with a close unanimous decision over the gutsy Derevyanchenko with scores of 114-113, 115-112, 115-112. For now talks about facing Canelo Alvarez again is out of the picture since Canelo is aiming to get to the higher weight class. That will leave Golovkin with no worthy opponent in the middleweight.
