The global bodybuilding community is in mourning following the sudden death of Spanish IFBB Pro Lorena Blanco at just 37 years old. Blanco, an elite competitor preparing for her Ms. Olympia debut in Las Vegas, collapsed unexpectedly at her home in Lugo, Spain, on a Saturday morning. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, with a suspected heart attack being the likely cause.

Lorena Blanco: A Rising Force in Women’s Bodybuilding

Lorena Blanco’s rise in the professional bodybuilding world was swift and powerful. She turned pro in 2023 and competed in seven major contests during the 2024 season. Her top finish—fourth place at the Tahoe Pro—earned her qualification for Ms. Olympia 2025, the pinnacle of female bodybuilding competition under the IFBB Professional League.

Trained by her husband and fellow fitness professional Isi Bolaños, Blanco became a familiar name among Spanish fitness circles, regularly training at the Club Fluvial de Lugo. Her disciplined work ethic and drive earned her multiple national titles before transitioning to the pro stage.

Ms. Olympia Preparation and Final Competition

Blanco had recently returned from Colombia, where she competed in the Gomeisa Ultimate Battle Pro in Medellín. Although she placed 12th, it was clear she was deep in her prep for Ms. Olympia—arguably the most demanding phase of any competitor’s season. Friends and family confirmed she was training intensely for the Las Vegas stage.

Her passing has reignited debate about the pressures and risks of peak competition prep, especially in high-level female divisions like Women’s Bodybuilding and Women’s Physique.

Condolences from the Bodybuilding Community

Tributes poured in from across the globe:
  • Pioneros del Culturismo Canario Español wrote, “We send our most sincere condolences to the friends and family of Lorena Blanco. Rest in peace.”
  • Another prominent training group stated, “The fitness world mourns a legend. RIP IFBB Pro Lorena Blanco, 1988–2025.”

Is Bodybuilding Becoming Too Dangerous?

While bodybuilding demands an extreme lifestyle of discipline, diet, and training, recent years have seen a rise in early deaths among both male and female athletes—many reportedly due to heart attacks, even in the absence of prior health conditions.

Fitness fans questioned whether excessive cardiovascular strain, extreme dehydration during contest prep, and possible performance-enhancing drug use could be contributing factors. A viral Facebook comment by user Ail Andy highlighted public concern:

“These sudden heart attacks happen to a lot of high-performance athletes… I think it has to do with the size of their hearts given the amount of exercise and their age.”

A String of Recent Bodybuilding Tragedies

Lorena Blanco's death is the latest in a string of heartbreaking losses in the bodybuilding world:
  • Zunilda Hoyos Mendez, a Colombian IFBB champion and OnlyFans creator, was murdered in June 2025 in a domestic violence case.
  • Jose Mateus Correia Silva, a 28-year-old Brazilian bodybuilder, died from a heart attack during a training session in 2024.
  • Matheus Pavlak, 19, a promising Brazilian teen competitor, also died from cardiac arrest in September 2023.
  • Xisco Serra, a veteran Majorcan bodybuilder, passed away at 50 after surviving both cancer and peritonitis.
These incidents point toward an unsettling trend—elite-level athletes in their prime succumbing to sudden death despite appearing to be in peak physical condition.

Health vs. Aesthetics: A Critical Discussion in the Sport

As the sport evolves, the conversation about balancing aesthetics with health is becoming unavoidable. While the visual standard continues to escalate, internal stressors—both physiological and psychological—may be reaching unsustainable levels.

Athletes like Blanco dedicate their lives to sculpting their physiques to perfection. But behind the trophies and glamour lies an often hidden toll on the heart, organs, and mental well-being. This tragedy reignites the need for:
  • Routine cardiac screenings in competitive athletes.
  • Education on PED risks.
  • Stronger community awareness around prep-related stress and its consequences.

Final Thoughts from the Bodybuilding World

Lorena Blanco was more than a physique competitor. She was a daughter, a wife, a coach, and an inspiration to aspiring female athletes worldwide. Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched, the stages she graced, and the conversations she now forces the bodybuilding world to confront.

Let her death not be in vain—but a wake-up call to reassess how we support and safeguard athletes pushing their limits for greatness.

Wow another one gone. Training for the O is intense but even then bodybuilders should never lose sight of their health.
