While exploring Japan, I visited a gym inspired entirely by the popular anime and manga series One Piece. Going in, I expected something similar to an anime convention mixed with a hardcore fitness environment—packed with fans, costumes, and high energy. Instead, the gym was surprisingly quiet, with very few people training when I arrived.
Even as someone who doesn't watch anime, the attention to detail throughout the facility was impressive. The gym featured custom-designed equipment inspired by One Piece, including a lap pulldown machine decorated with horns, barbells shaped like giant pieces of meat, and other pirate-themed training accessories. While I didn't fully understand the references, the equipment looked unique and well-made.
Beyond the themed decorations, the gym itself was much more complete than expected. It offered a wide range of serious training equipment, including Smith machines, squat racks, chest machines, weighted pull-up vests, and even weight plates designed to resemble gold coins from the One Piece universe. For cardio enthusiasts, there was also a full selection of standard cardio machines.
One surprising observation was the gym's dumbbell selection. The weights only went up to 30 kilograms (around 66 pounds), which led me to wonder whether One Piece characters are actually known for being muscular. Compared to anime series like Dragon Ball Z, which features famously over-the-top physiques, One Piece doesn't seem to have the same reputation for producing massively jacked characters.
Overall, the gym delivered a fun and unique experience. It successfully blended anime culture with practical fitness equipment, creating an environment that appeals to both fans of One Piece and fitness enthusiasts looking for something different. Even without understanding the anime references, it was easy to appreciate the creativity and effort that went into designing the space.
For anyone visiting Japan who enjoys fitness, anime, or simply unusual gyms, a visit to a One Piece-themed gym offers a memorable experience unlike a typical commercial fitness center.
