Larry Wheels Says He Won’t Return to Competitive Bodybuilding After Biceps Injury

Larry Wheels has apparently closed the door on a competitive bodybuilding comeback, and the latest twist in his career came from an unexpected place: the boxing ring.

The strength-sports star suffered a serious right biceps injury during his August 22 boxing match against Vitaly Zdorovetskiy at Brand Risk 15 in Miami. The injury ended the fight and resulted in a no-contest ruling. Just days later, Wheels made his position on bodybuilding clear, saying he has “no intention” of returning to the sport.

Larry Wheels Interview after Bicep Injury During Boxing Fight

For a fighter and strength athlete who has repeatedly pushed his body to extreme levels, the decision adds another chapter to an already unusual career.

Larry Wheels Injured His Biceps During a Boxing Match

The latest injury did not happen during a bodybuilding workout or powerlifting session. It happened while Wheels was boxing Vitaly at Brand Risk 15.

Wheels appeared to be having success early in the bout and scored a knockdown before the injury brought the contest to an abrupt end. According to reports, he grabbed at his right arm after the sequence and could not continue. The bout was officially recorded as a no contest rather than a win for Wheels or a victory for Vitaly.

The incident reportedly occurred after Wheels landed a punch while Vitaly was down. In a post-fight discussion, Wheels apologized for the shot and said that was the punch that caused the biceps injury. He described the tendon as “totally detached,” although the precise diagnosis has not been independently confirmed.

That distinction matters. While the visual appearance of the injury has attracted plenty of attention online, the exact severity and treatment plan should not be assumed from videos or photographs alone.

Why Wheels Is Walking Away From Bodybuilding

The most significant part of Wheels' post-fight comments wasn't simply the injury. It was what he said about his future.

When discussing his recovery, Wheels explained that his previous left biceps injury took roughly three to four weeks to heal in his experience. He also said he chose not to undergo surgery at that time because of the lengthy recovery involved.

He then made the key statement regarding bodybuilding: he said he has no intention of doing bodybuilding.

That comment is particularly notable because Wheels has already accomplished something many people never expected from him. After establishing himself as an elite powerlifter, he transitioned into bodybuilding and earned his IFBB Pro card in Classic Physique in 2023.

However, his competitive interests have increasingly moved beyond bodybuilding. His recent boxing appearance is another example of Wheels continuing to explore different combat and strength-sports challenges.

From Powerlifting to Bodybuilding to Boxing

Wheels' career has never followed a conventional path.

He became famous for extraordinary powerlifting performances before branching into other strength disciplines. Bodybuilding eventually became another major goal, requiring him to place greater emphasis on muscular proportions, conditioning, and presentation.

He also explored arm wrestling and other strength-related competitions before making a much more dramatic crossover into combat sports.

The Vitaly fight represented another step in that evolution. Instead of preparing for a bodybuilding stage, Wheels was preparing to trade punches in a boxing ring.

That makes his latest comments about bodybuilding more understandable. His interests appear to be moving away from the traditional bodybuilding competition route and toward other forms of athletic performance.

The Biceps Injury Could Change His Training

Biceps injuries are particularly significant for athletes who rely heavily on pulling, pressing, gripping, and upper-body strength.

For Wheels, the situation is even more complicated because his athletic background covers powerlifting, bodybuilding and combat sports. All three can place substantial demands on the arms, although the specific movements and stresses are different.

Wheels said he may allow the latest injury to heal without surgery, similar to how he approached his previous biceps injury. He also mentioned the possibility of using peptides during his recovery.

However, reports have emphasized that his current treatment decision has not been officially confirmed. Some commentators initially suggested surgery could be necessary, while sports physician Brian Sutterer has explained that certain biceps tendon ruptures can sometimes be managed without surgery.

That means fans should avoid treating any projected recovery timeline as definitive until Wheels receives and shares a confirmed medical assessment.

What This Means for Boxing

From a boxing perspective, the injury is especially unfortunate because Wheels appeared to be finding success against Vitaly before the bout ended.

He scored a knockdown, showed flashes of aggression, and later said he felt more composed than he expected. But the biceps injury prevented the fight from producing an official winner.

That leaves an obvious question for boxing fans: could Wheels return for another fight?

At this point, there is no confirmed rematch announcement. His immediate priority appears to be recovering from the injury and getting back to training.

A return to boxing would also require careful consideration of whether the injured arm can handle punching, defensive movements, and the repetitive stress of training. That decision should ultimately come from Wheels and his medical team rather than speculation from fans.

Could Larry Wheels Return to Powerlifting?

Bodybuilding may be off the table, but that does not necessarily mean Wheels is finished with strength sports.

Powerlifting remains one of the disciplines most closely associated with his career. His enormous strength helped establish him as a major internet fitness personality long before bodybuilding or boxing became major parts of his story.

Whether he eventually returns to competitive powerlifting is unknown. Much will depend on how his current injury heals and what he wants from his athletic career.

For now, there is no need to assume that stepping away from bodybuilding means stepping away from training altogether.

A New Chapter for Larry Wheels

Larry Wheels' career has always been about pushing into unfamiliar territory.

He went from powerlifting to bodybuilding, earned an IFBB Pro card, experimented with other strength disciplines, and eventually entered the influencer-boxing world. Now, another biceps injury has forced him to reassess what comes next.

His latest comments make one thing clear: competitive bodybuilding is not currently part of that plan.

The irony is that his latest injury happened while pursuing boxing rather than bodybuilding. Wheels appeared to be building momentum in the ring before the injury abruptly ended the night.

For boxing fans, the biggest takeaway is simple. Wheels' Brand Risk 15 appearance produced a knockdown but no official victory, while the biceps injury may have significant consequences for whatever sport he chooses next.

Whether that means another boxing appearance, a return to powerlifting or simply a period away from competition remains to be seen.

What seems much clearer is that the bodybuilding comeback many fans once imagined is no longer something Larry Wheels is actively pursuing.

And considering how unpredictable his career has been, it will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

rough to see, especially considering how much work he’s put into building his physique and strength. Injuries can completely change the direction of a career, and sometimes the smartest move is accepting that the body needs a different approach rather than forcing a comeback.
