In a fiery RX Muscle rant, Dave Palumbo sets the record straight after Dorian Yates recently slammed insulin use in bodybuilding, calling it dangerous and citing statistics that imply it shortens life expectancy by a decade. Palumbo, a longtime admirer of Yates, didn't hold back — praising Dorian’s physique and legacy, but calling his insulin claims misleading and outright incorrect.
Palumbo argues the statistic Yates referenced — that insulin users live 10 years less — applies only to diabetics, not bodybuilders. He explains that most diabetic insulin users already suffer from poor metabolic health, organ damage, and high blood sugar — which is why they die early, not because of insulin itself. He says equating that to healthy, regimented bodybuilders is a flawed analogy.
According to Palumbo, when used correctly, insulin can be health-preserving for bodybuilders, especially those running high growth hormone and large food volumes. He breaks down two major reasons for insulin use in bodybuilding:
Palumbo acknowledges insulin isn’t necessary for everyone and can cause fat gain if abused. But to say it causes early death, across the board, is misinformation. He ends the rant reminding everyone: “When someone like Dorian — who’s usually spot-on — puts out flawed information, it’s important to correct it. Because people listen.”
Strong words from one of the most experienced voices in bodybuilding pharmacology.
Thoughts? Is Palumbo right to push back here? Or do you think Dorian’s caution is justified?

- Health – Long-acting insulin helps regulate elevated fasting glucose levels from massive food intake and GH use, potentially extending a bodybuilder’s health span.
- Performance/Growth – Short-acting insulin, taken strategically with carbs (like in Milos Sarcev’s protocol), helps shuttle nutrients into muscle. If properly dosed, Palumbo argues this doesn’t increase mortality or cause side effects beyond temporary bloating or fat gain if mismanaged.
