NEWTOWN - A former member of the Easton Police Commission who was part of a steroid ring operated by a Newtown police sergeant was fined and put on probation Thursday for his role in the operation.


Authorities said Raymond Martin, 48, worked as a distributor for former Newtown Sgt. Steven Santucci, who was sentenced last year to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of conspiracy.


According to court documents, Martin would routinely contact Santucci for steroids and other drugs that he would then sell at a profit to other customers. Martin, who also owns a cigar shop in Stratford, had also offered to sell Oxycodone pills and human growth hormone (HGH) for Santucci as well, court documents state.


Santucci a ran a “steroid importation, manufacturing and trafficking organization (that) includes other law enforcement officers, government officials and body builders in Connecticut and elsewhere,” the federal complaint against Martin states. Other members of the ring sold other prescription drugs as well as cocaine.


Police said Santucci received shipments of steroid ingredients from China and manufactured and distributed large quantities of finished drugs to bodybuilders in local gyms.


Santucci claims in court documents that his abuse of steroids began nearly a decade ago, when his efforts at the gym failed to give him the results he desired. He began importing the drugs from China, but turned to manufacturing his own when the habit became expensive, documents state.


Federal prosecutors claim Santucci used the proceeds of the drug sales to fund a lavish lifestyle that included more than $300,000 spent on first-class trips to Europe, South America and Africa, including a $30,000 safari. Authorities said Santucci also spent more than $23,000 on Celebrity Cruises.


For his role in the scheme, Martin was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay a fine of $10,000.
