(CNN) -- A new national poll suggests that three out of four Americans feel President Bush's departure from office is coming not a moment too soon.
Twenty-eight percent of those polled say President Bush is the worst president in U.S. history.

Twenty-eight percent of those polled say President Bush is the worst president in U.S. history.

Seventy-five percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Friday said they're glad Bush is going; 23 percent indicated they'll miss him.

"Earlier this year, Bush scored some of the lowest presidential approval ratings we've seen in half a century, so it's understandable that the public is eager for a new president to step in," said Keating Holland, CNN polling director.

CNN senior political analyst Bill Schneider added, "As President Bush prepares to leave office, the American public has a parting thought: Good riddance. At least that's the way three-quarters feel." Video Watch how Bush's farewell polls compare »

The portion who say they won't miss Bush is 24 percentage points higher than the 51 percent who said they wouldn't miss President Bill Clinton when he left office in January 2001. Forty-five percent of those questioned at that time said they would miss Clinton.

The poll indicates that Bush compares poorly with his presidential predecessors, with 28 percent saying that he's the worst ever. Forty percent rate Bush's presidency as poor, and 31 percent say he's been a good president.

Only a third of those polled said they want Bush to remain active in public life after he leaves the White House. That 33 percent figure is 22 points lower than those in 2001 who wanted Bill Clinton to retain a public role.

"It's been like a failed marriage," Schneider said.

"Things started out well. When President Bush first took office in 2001, more than 60 percent saw him as strong and decisive. That impression was confirmed after the September 11th attacks. The public still saw Bush as strong and decisive when he took office a second time in 2005.

"But no more. The public has completely lost confidence in this president," Schneider said.

Bush has dropped on a number of measures, but possibly the biggest is that only 20 percent say he inspires confidence, Holland said.

"That's an important figure when the country is facing its biggest economic crisis in a generation," he added.

When running for the White House in the 2000 presidential campaign, Bush promised to be a uniter and not a divider. But 82 percent of poll respondents felt that Bush did not unite the country, compared with 17 percent who said he did.

"The vast majority of Americans believe he betrayed his promise to unite the country," Schneider said. "He took a country that was divided under President Clinton and he divided it worse."

Only 27 percent of those questioned in the poll approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president; 72 percent disapprove.

"President Bush's job approval rating has been at or below freezing since the beginning of the year," Schneider said. "The current 27 percent approval rating is one of the lowest ratings for any president, ever."

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll was conducted December 19-21, with 1,013 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Only 75%? I thought it would be much higher. They should do the poll in the rest of the world and it would be higher.

The other 25% is glad Bush is done, but they would rather have another term of Bush rather than Obama.

The people dunno wtf they want or what a good leader is now we can all disagree with soem of Bush's policies and diesicions but when it comes down to it he did his best to protect us during a time of crisis, sure he lined the pockets of his oil buddies but.

Most americans in his shoes would have hit the nuke button immediately, Bush now note I don't like bush, but no one could have handled the pressure of what he endured while he was in office. We were attacked by an enemy with no nation, no capital... And it was an attack that was the largest and one of the most devastaing attacks on our nation since pearl harbor.

Atfer that occured many people wanted to wipe the Arab nations off the face of the planet Muslims were completeled hated, and that pressure from the people was pushed unot Bush but he acted as a president and made a diecision. and as everyone bitched that soliders were dieing (they ARE fucking soldiers so...wtf)

And people planted conspiracy theories on him as the anti-christ, and a war mongeror, and oil baron etc..etc..etc.. what did we the american people do?

WE VOTED FOR HIM AGIAN!!!

So everyone needs to stop thier bitching.

Just my 2 cents.

^^ Good point. If he was so bad how did he get multiple terms in office?

Also if he was so bad then why did so few people turn out to vote against him?

Did you happen to see John Kerry? The past 3 elections have been terrible in terms of choices. Lewis Black said something like the 2004 election was like choosing between two bowls of shit that smelled different.

Also, just because the majority is uneducated and votes for Obama or Bush, doesn't mean that people who didn't vote for these people can't complain. Just saying...

That's actually quite simple, since bush was in an active war that NO ONE liked but no one really wanted to end, I mean seriously look at protestors they are agisnt troops dieing, but they never really want us to leave IRAQ alone they just don't want soldiers to die which by all counts of American wars this one has the least amount of casualties. :wutyousay:

but when a Politician looks at bush and decides to run aginst him they know they are going to have to handle this war, they know once they take office ALL that pressure is going to be put on thier shoulders.

They are going to have to handle terriost threats, protestors, shoes being thrown at them (lulz), countires shouting war crimes, domestic threats, Katrina victims callling him racist cuase he could not send enough troops to aid quickly enough during a war. and all the while mroe and more people jump on a band wagon of Bush Haters. Any politician knew they would have to take that mantle if they beat him so what did they do.. encourage a dumbass to run agisnt him just to make it appear they were trying. *cough* John Kerry *cough*

Cuase everyone in congress knew this which is why few of them actually protested agianst bush they knew what he was up agisnt and just stfu and did thier job. Where as citizen 2/3rds of which DONT VOTE! bitchabout bush on a nearly constant basis. I just pisses me off when citizens whom never were in the arms services even peace corp, never vote or donate anything to the troops or contribute ANYTHING to this country bitch about what direction it takes. it's just mindboggling that anyone could do that it is the same as someone whom got unto a plane for free while everyone else paid, and bitches the entire time about having to sit in the back of coach and his ice being dilluted in thier drink.

And what this says is Bush was like our Dark Knight he knew what he had to do he knew he would he hated for it but also knew it was the best course of action to accomplish goals in the best interest of the country.
Now im not a bush supporter except when they put kerry aginst him cause.... when yopu put soemone liek Kerry agianst Bush... Bush just seems like an awesome choice. Now Bush made ALOT of stupid decisions but I could not have done any better, honestly it's the curse of being a good leader you will be hated if everyone likes you, you did your job wrong.

As of now everyone will hate Bush but in time they will learn of how good of a leader he really was. When we get a president that ca't handle the pressure and just lock up in office...please not Obama lol.

another 2 cents lol. :xyxthumbs:

I don't disagree with any particular point TJ and Samoan.

But :soapbox: what I do see is a country that has half a dozen candidates for president (13 or so all up) running, we hear about 2 of them and a record turnout to vote is half the registered voters turning up. I'm sorry but those are some pretty lame figures (and yes I realise there is a lot more to it than that).

And I see this lack of input into changing society as the lazy whinging fuckers. We get them throughout society, and they always want someone else to fix the problem. If you aren't out there casting a vote, campaigning for better media coverage for the other options, etc, then you are part of the problem. No vote = suck it up.
