Remembering Urias “Strongman” McHutchinson: An Enduring Bodybuilding Icon

A Legacy Built on Strength and Discipline

Urias McHutchinson—affectionately known throughout Laventille as “Strongman”—passed away at age 83 following complications from a stroke. He remained an active competitor until his last moments, embodying the essence of disciplined, lifelong dedication to fitness.

Trinidad & Tobago Bodybuilders Federation: National Senior Championships

Roots, Beginnings, and a Lifelong Journey

Born in 1941 in Dickson Village, Georgetown, St. Vincent, McHutchinson spent his early years inspired by his father's strength and work ethic. He initially pursued careers as a teacher and a member of the Royal St. Vincent & Grenadines Police Force before migrating to Trinidad and Tobago in 1964 at age 23. Over the ensuing decades, he cemented his status as one of the country's oldest and most committed bodybuilders.

Sporting Achievements Against the Odds

Despite his non-citizen status, which limited his eligibility for certain competitions, McHutchinson made his mark with remarkable performances:

  • During the 1980s, he earned the “Best Built Man” title at the Courts Classic.
  • After two decades away from competition, at age 77, he returned to win the Over-70s category at the Trinidad and Tobago Bodybuilders and Fitness Federation Championship in 2019—a feat that garnered invitations to events in Barbados and Guyana.
  • He remained a consistent presence in lightweight and veteran divisions at national competitions.

Home Base: La Joya Gym

Training at La Joya Gym in St. Joseph, McHutchinson became part of a community of seasoned athletes. Among his training partners was Damian George, the 2025 Senior National Champion. His reputation as a “gym rat” was well-earned—he was present nearly every day, regardless of circumstances or health advisories.

Championing Natural Fitness

McHutchinson was a vocal advocate for drug-free bodybuilding, cautioning younger athletes:

“It took me years before I could come like that... Taking drugs damages your insides before your time. So it’s better you stay away from it.”

Final Tribute

He was cremated following a service at Allen’s Funeral Home, Broadway, Arima, surrounded by family, gym colleagues, and admirers who celebrated his unwavering discipline, authenticity, and lasting contribution to bodybuilding.
