Rockhampton Trainer Nick Walsh Slapped with 12-Month Ban for Steroid Violations

Things just got real in the Australian racing scene. Rockhampton-based trainer Nick Walsh has been officially disqualified for 12 months after his horse Sailor’s Rum tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol — not once, not twice, but three separate times between November and December 2024.

The bombshell dropped after Racing Queensland stewards confirmed positive results from:

• An out-of-competition test on Nov 27,
• A post-race test after a win at Rockhampton on Dec 19, and
• A follow-up out-of-competition swab the very next day, Dec 20.

Walsh faced charges under AR 242(a) and AR 240(2) for possession and administration of banned substances. He pleaded guilty back in May 2025 — but the guilty plea wasn’t enough to soften the penalty.

Full 12-month disqualification, effective immediately as of June 17, 2025. Sailor’s Rum is sidelined until at least Dec 20, 2025, and must test clean before racing again. Walsh has 7 days to transfer his stable of 16 horses, but he’s barred from training during the transition.

This isn’t Walsh’s first rodeo either — stewards pointed out it’s his third steroid-related offense in under a year, with previous penalties involving Dexamethasone and Furosemide.

Despite Walsh cooperating with the investigation and accepting responsibility, Racing Queensland came down hard — sending a clear message that PEDs won’t be tolerated in the sport.
