His eyes aren't closed. He was just looking downwards directly to the microphone or at least that's my impression.
As for being...stupid, let's give him few more chances. He'd just won his most important bodybuilding competition yet. Had I done the same, I too wouldn't have found my words and would have sounded stupid.
