A suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest killed at least nine people and injured 31 others Saturday in Iraq's interior, officials said.
The bomber struck about 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the town of al-Iskandariya, about 40 kilometers (24 miles) south of Baghdad, said an official with Iraq's Interior Ministry.
Members of "awakening councils" were visiting their headquarters to collect salaries at the time of the attack.
Iraqi soldiers and members of the councils were among the killed and wounded.
Awakening councils, also known as Sons of Iraq, are primarily a Sunni movement composed of former insurgents or sympathizers who have turned against al Qaeda.
The U.S. military credits the councils with having played a key role in bringing about the nationwide drop in violence that coincided with the "surge" in U.S. forces in Iraq.
Iskandariya is in Babel province.
