Tart cherry extract may ease your DOMS by tapping into polyphenols and anthocyanins that calm inflammation and oxidative stress from muscle damage. A 2026 meta-analysis found reduced soreness at 48 hours, with some benefits at 24 and 72 hours too. But results aren't guaranteed. Only 6 of 22 trials showed significant effects, largely due to dosing and timing differences.

What Causes DOMS After Heavy Training?

When you push a muscle through unfamiliar movement patterns or load it more than it's accustomed to, you create microscopic tears in the muscle fibers and surrounding connective tissue. This exercise-induced muscle damage triggers an inflammatory response as your body works to repair the affected tissue. That repair process is what produces delayed-onset muscle soreness, typically peaking 24 to 72 hours after training rather than immediately. New exercises, eccentric-heavy movements, and sudden jumps in volume are common triggers because your muscles haven't adapted to that specific stress yet.
Understanding this mechanism matters if you're considering tart cherry extract as part of your muscle recovery strategy. Since tart cherry supplementation is thought to target inflammation and oxidative stress, its potential benefits are tied directly to how DOMS actually develops.

How Does Tart Cherry Extract Fight Muscle Soreness?

Tart Cherry Extract for DOMS Reduction in Bodybuilding

Because Montmorency tart cherries are rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins, researchers believe these compounds can blunt some of the oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling that drive muscle soreness after hard training. When you take tart cherry extract for DOMS, you're fundamentally giving your body a concentrated dose of these plant compounds around the time muscle damage occurs. The theory is that by tempering excessive inflammation and free radical activity, you might experience less muscle soreness in the days following an intense session. That said, tart cherry and muscle recovery research shows these mechanisms don't fully explain every outcome. Some markers of damage improve, others don't budge. Still, if you're looking to support post-workout recovery, tart cherry offers a plausible biological pathway worth considering.

Does Tart Cherry Extract Actually Reduce Soreness? The Evidence

How well does tart cherry actually hold up when researchers put it to the test? The picture is promising but not uniform. A 2026 network meta-analysis found tart cherry extract notably reduced DOMS at 48 hours compared with placebo, with additional benefits showing up at 24 and 72 hours. That's a meaningful signal for DOMS reduction that bodybuilding athletes care about after tough sessions.
But a separate scoping review found only 6 of 22 tart cherry muscle soreness trials showed significant results, exposing real variability across protocols. So while tart cherry post-workout use has legitimate research support, it's not guaranteed. Muscle recovery outcomes seem to depend heavily on dosing, timing, and training type rather than tart cherry alone solving soreness.

How Much Tart Cherry Extract Should You Take?

Dosing questions come up fast once you decide to try tart cherry, and the honest answer is that research hasn't settled on one universal number. Studies on tart cherry extract for DOMS reduction have used varied protocols, from whole cherry juice concentrates to standardized capsules, making direct comparisons tricky. For muscle recovery purposes, many trials cluster around doses providing meaningful anthocyanin content taken twice daily, starting a few days before intense training and continuing through the following days. In bodybuilding contexts, matching product labeling to research-supported amounts matters more than picking a random serving size. Since formulations differ widely in concentration, checking standardized anthocyanin or polyphenol content gives you a better reference point than dosage alone. Treat soreness management as one variable, not the whole recovery equation.

How to Pick a Tart Cherry Supplement That Works

Why do two bottles labeled "tart cherry" sometimes produce completely different results? The answer lies in supplement composition. Whole cherry powders, juices, concentrates, and true tart cherry extract don't deliver the same anthocyanin content, even when serving sizes look similar. Some products list only "tart cherry blend" without specifying concentration, making it impossible to know what you're actually taking.
When shopping for tart cherry for bodybuilding use, look for standardized anthocyanin content on the label, not just total cherry weight. Research trials typically use extracts with verified polyphenol levels, so matching that standardization gives you a better shot at replicating those muscle recovery outcomes. Skip vague labeling and compare milligrams of active compounds directly. That's the difference between a supplement that works and one that's just cherry-flavored guesswork.

The research is pretty interesting, but I’d still keep my expectations realistic; personally, I’d try a properly standardized tart cherry extract after hard sessions and see if I actually notice a difference in my DOMS.
