Once I heard from a ninety-year-old man (who, by the way, was married to a woman who was far from old) words that, I think, partly illuminated the essence of longevity. The old man — though it was difficult to call him an old man — was a lean, upright man with an intelligent, inquisitive gaze. He said:

— I am very happy to be alive...

I heard this and was stunned. How much meaning there was in those words! Surely this is precisely where we can find an explanation for the longevity of many people and, conversely, for the illnesses and premature deaths of others.

If a person lives in surroundings that do not oppress them, if they like their home and the people around them, and if they greet each day with pleasure rather than grumbling and anxiety, they will live a long life; and even if they do not live to a very advanced age, they will still make the most of their allotted years and will not collapse on the threshold of truly mature old age.

A whole world of joys, great and small — without them there is no pulse of life. Beethoven's longing for love and joy bursts forth not in words but in a cry:

“O Providence... send me at least one moment of pure joy!..”

One can meet sorrow, troubles and upheavals and move beyond them if there is this world of love and joy. It is precisely the feeling of love (not the petty pursuit of chance, dog-like encounters) that makes both men and women beautiful and unconquerable...

The great musician Pablo Casals, when he woke in the morning, would invariably hurry to his beloved cello and, not out of duty or because it was time for a lesson or rehearsal, but for the sheer joy and pleasure of it, would play for about an hour. Only afterwards would come the ritual of washing, shaving and breakfast... And there was also his love for a woman, right into old age... This is precisely that same harmony of existence. And it is characteristic of — and accessible to — by no means only famous people protected by wealth and fame.

Casals lived almost a century, giving concerts almost until the very last days of his life.” (Yuri Vlasov, The Price of Life).
