Major Seizure of Counterfeit M30 Pills in Western Washington

Federal and local law enforcement agencies have seized over 50,000 counterfeit M30 pills containing carfentanil in Western Washington, underscoring a rising threat in the synthetic opioid crisis. On September 16, 2025, the DEA Seattle Field Division, working with the ATF, Federal Way Police, and Centralia Police, apprehended a suspect at a Centralia gas station. A narcotics K-9 detected the presence of drugs in the vehicle, leading to the discovery of 50,208 pills. These tablets, originally suspected to contain fentanyl, were later confirmed by the DEA Western Laboratory in Pleasanton, California to contain carfentanil and acetaminophen filler. The driver, a resident of Pacific, Washington, now faces federal charges.

Carfentanil: A Deadly Synthetic Opioid

Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid developed for veterinary use, primarily to sedate large animals such as elephants. Its potency is staggering—10,000 times stronger than morphine and 100 times stronger than fentanyl—and it is not approved for human consumption. As DEA Special Agent in Charge David F. Reames described, “Carfentanil is like fentanyl on steroids.” Because of its extreme strength, even a microscopic amount can cause death, making it one of the most dangerous substances currently circulating in the illicit drug market.

The Deceptive Appearance of Counterfeit Pills

To increase profits and potency, criminal organizations often press carfentanil into counterfeit pills resembling prescription opioids, such as oxycodone M30 tablets. These pills deceive users who may believe they are taking a much weaker drug, drastically increasing the risk of fatal overdose. According to the CDC, carfentanil-related deaths increased from 29 deaths in the first half of 2023 to 238 deaths in the first half of 2024, with the drug now detected in 37 states nationwide. King County alone has reported six carfentanil-related overdoses in 2024 and four more so far in 2025.

Why Carfentanil Overdoses Are So Deadly

Carfentanil’s potency means its onset of symptoms occurs within minutes, leaving little time for life-saving interventions. Symptoms of exposure include:

  • Severe respiratory depression or arrest
  • Drowsiness and sedation
  • Disorientation and pinpoint pupils
  • Clammy skin
While naloxone (Narcan) is the standard emergency treatment for opioid overdoses, normal doses are often insufficient for carfentanil. Multiple, high-dose administrations may be required, and even then, the reversal of overdose symptoms is not guaranteed.

Synthetic Opioids: Escalating the U.S. Overdose Epidemic

Synthetic opioids, led by fentanyl and its analogues, are responsible for nearly 70% of all overdose deaths in 2023. Carfentanil’s rise signals a new and alarming evolution in the opioid epidemic, where increasingly potent substances appear faster than public health responses can adapt.

Protecting Yourself from Counterfeit Pills

Public health authorities emphasize the “One Pill Can Kill” warning. To protect yourself:
  • Never take pills not prescribed by a licensed medical professional.
  • Avoid purchasing pills online or from unverified sources.
  • If you suspect someone has been exposed to carfentanil or is overdosing, call 911 immediately and administer naloxone if available.
  • Use fentanyl test strips as an additional safety measure, though note they may not detect carfentanil.

Key Takeaway

The seizure of 50,208 carfentanil-laced counterfeit M30 pills in Washington highlights an unprecedented risk to public safety. With synthetic opioids driving the majority of overdose deaths, public awareness, strict law enforcement action, and immediate emergency responses are essential to countering this deadly trend.
