Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis gained weight to fight welterweight contender Stephen Thompson in Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN on March 23. Thompson with his fight record of 14-3-1 is favored over Pettis whose record of 21-8 is not really scary at all. Thompson had a draw and split decision loss to former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley who recently lost the title to Kamaru Usman.

Thompson was a -350 favorite and the odds showed well in the first round. Pettis had a bloodied face at the start of the 2nd round and it looked like he was in for another sorry loss until that fateful canto where Pettis released a superman punch that felled Thompson. The unexpected knockout of "wonderboy" Thompson happened 5 seconds left in the 2nd round. UFC president Dana White said that Pettis had done what former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley failed to do twice. It was the first stoppage loss for Thompson.
